I hate queuing for a wee at outdoor events so was chuffed tc see this innovation. I'm intrigued as to how one actually uses it but on the face of it this looks like a good idea.

What do we think?

No I'm not weeing in public with no door thanks.

MoreAloneTime · 05/06/2021 07:22

Agree that weeing in public would be awkward. I've never been convinced by that "solution" of going in a cubicle with the door open for a buggy and this would be worse.

3Britnee · 05/06/2021 07:26

Those walls look short, like people will see your top half/face. Fuck that. And I didn't see any sinks.

MrsFin · 05/06/2021 07:30

When I tried a shee wee, I didn't like it.
The wee doesn't come out with the necessary force to get the flow far enough away from your feet like it would if it was coming out of a penis. It just dribbles out.

Like everyone else I'm dubious about the peequal for all kinds of reasons, but I guess it's worth trying. Anything which eliminates queues is worth trying. But I'm not sure this will. The queues are due to women needing to take longer in the toilet because of having to get undressed, change tampons etc, and that won't change just because we're in a toilet with low walls and no door.

What s actually needed are adequate lavatories in public spaces and private events to meet the needs of both sexes. The closure of public lavatories across the land pre and during the pandemic is appalling and a hidden effect of austerity.
Rich countries need access to decent sanitation and it should be a requirement that large events provide adequate numbers of useable, hygienic lavatories for all.
Those little plastic chemical lavatories without hand washing facilities and which become very unpleasant are not adequate.

It’s not a feminist issue it’s a public health issue.

Ylvamoon · 05/06/2021 07:32

There are similar toilet types on the market.... a service station in France springs to mind! It really is just a hole in the ground. Disgusting is the only way to describe it.

MedusasBadHairDay · 05/06/2021 07:35

I'm really not sure what this is meant to solve? I can't see how this will reduce queues?

HazeyJaneII · 05/06/2021 07:35

Surely one of the reason women take longer is that there will be a certain number of women having a period, how would you deal with that in these?

beryltheperilrocks · 05/06/2021 07:49

Are they meant to be used alongside usual loos....so if you need a pee use this. .anything else use the normal loo. I don't understand how to use them though?

TabithaTiger · 05/06/2021 07:57

I can see how these would be useful at festivals, ideal when you just need a quick wee. Obviously you still need the option of proper loo's for anything else, in the same way men have the option of urinals or cubicles.

Moltenpink · 05/06/2021 08:00

I’ve tried one at Glastonbury festival, they gave you a tetra pack disposable shee wee on the way in. It was brilliant (no having to go into awful portaloo & sit on seat) but probably not the best for the environment. I had mine hanging quite discreetly out of my trousers, but my less shy friend just dropped trousers to her ankles to use it

Brown76 · 05/06/2021 08:06

I used something like this at a festival , female urinal with a she wee. Sinks were outside in an open area, you didn’t hang up a bag. She wee can be used without pulling trousers right down, but it is nerve wracking getting used to it. Use at home first. Also useful for my daughter and avoids pee on trousers/shoes that you get from ‘going behind a bush’
.

SellFridges · 05/06/2021 08:07

They’ve had female urinals at Glastonbury for at least 13 years because that’s the last time I went. They handed out cardboard she wees and away you went. It’s all we used the last time we went. Very easy to use, even when eating trousers. Excellent for festivals.

Lucked · 05/06/2021 08:13

I think the floor will be covered in wee, we have all been in a toilet after someone has hovered and not cleaned up after themselves.

I can’t work out from what I have seen how large it is and if you squat back or straddle it which wouldn’t be possible in trousers.

I remember the old french whole in the ground and I never managed it well. I agree with pp we need adequate toilet provision.

5zeds · 05/06/2021 08:22

I THINK they’re selling the cubicles/walls rather than the toilet itself. So the pitch is, remove the doors and half the walls will make things quicker.Hmm.

SnoopCatz · 05/06/2021 08:29

One of the pictures on the website had a man looming over the top with a camera.

Looks like it has been designed by a pervert. Why the need for half size walls? Is watching women wee a spectator sport now?

They didn't think that choice of photo through did they? 😂
Arbadacarba · 05/06/2021 09:00

Yes, I remember French service station toilets where you have to squat on the ground. Better than nothing but would be impossible to use if you had restricted mobility - and being unable to squat and get up again does require an agility that some just won't have.

PainterInPeril · 05/06/2021 09:02

Why is it a problem if women take longer than men to visit the toilet?
Why should women feel pressured to be like men?
Why would anyone design an even less safe space for women when we're already at risk from dangerous men?
Why can't there just be more normal toilets provided?
Why provide people to explain how to use this urinal? We women are capable of reading and understanding a sign. Plus the fact, surely if there's a need for 'security'

Hallyup6 · 05/06/2021 09:03

Grim. How the hell do you use it? The only obvious solution is to straddle but I don't see that as anymore hygienic than a toilet. No privacy, in fact some of those configurations would have you staring directly at the next woman. How do you change tampons etc? Where do you wash your hands? There's zero way I'd used it.

PainterInPeril · 05/06/2021 09:05

Oops, posted too soon....

If there's a need for 'security', then surely it's not for for purpose.

TheFairyCaravan · 05/06/2021 09:06

Absolutely no chance would I use one. No one wants men in a ladies toilet so why on earth does anyone want a toilet where any man can peer over the top?

Madcats · 05/06/2021 09:21

I've found the BBC interview from last night. The immediate plan is to give women a quicker option to portaloos at festivals:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-57340739

Arbadacarba · 05/06/2021 09:22

Just looking at their website, much of the benefit seems to be that it's eco-friendly compared to a standard loo - also it can be flat packed and easily configured to fit into different spaces, so easier to transport and install than portaloos.

I mean, I'd use it - I'd use anything if I had to - but I don't have mobility issues and I no longer have periods, so I don't need much from a toilet.
