My son can hear!

Ds is 8, diagnosed with glue ear aged 1. He has had 2 sets of grommets which worked well while they were in but the last lot only stayed in for 6 months which was less time than the waiting list for the operation. After a lot of faffing around and more waiting, Ds got his hearing aids today. They are AMAZING. Ds has been walking around the house, telling me excitedly that he can hear his footsteps. I'm so pleased for him and I just want to shout it from the rooftops.

Enjoy.

My DH received a cochlear implant 18 years ago, we still talk about how much it has changed our lives and how strange it was hearing things for the first time in a long time.

Check out YouTube and the baby girl who heard her dm tell her she loved her for the first time!!
Heart of stone not to cry!!

Lovely to read some good news, so glad for you both

Aw, that's great news. My friends ds got hearing aids a little younger than your son. He couldn't hear low frequencies, it was amazing the things we take for granted that he'd never heard before. He didn't know that the microwave or the car engine made a noise. He spent a good week or more asking what's that sound and being amazed.

Marmaladeagain · 04/06/2021 23:50

Hear his own footsteps - that is almost poetic! Bless the little chap. Wonderful.

Happyd · 04/06/2021 23:52

That’s wonderful OP, I’m so happy for you both! You must be thrilled for him. What fun he’ll have discovering all the new sounds!

Shocked and sad that NHS waiting lists are so unacceptably long when it’s a matter of a small child’s hearing tho.

BikeRunSki · 04/06/2021 23:57

How wonderful!! I’m 50. I didn’t hear until I was 3. I don’t remember not being able to hear, but DM still tells people about I when I could!

Wishitsnows · 04/06/2021 23:59

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 05/06/2021 00:06

That's absolutely fab!
My DD had glue ear & grommets op twice & luckily her hearing is fine.
I had glue ear & grommets as a child & my DM had constant earache as a child.
Narrow Eustachian tubes definitely run in families.

My brother had surgery when he was 3 on his ears and the next day he woke up crying that there were monsters outside. It was birds singing and he had never heard them before. My mother cried so hard that day .
