Are most actresses very very slim in real life?

I saw a well known actress a few days ago, standing behind her in the queue for a coffee. She was dressed down, however was clearly very pretty in person. However I was taken aback by how slim she was. I would say she was slightly taller than average, not a tiny person if you know what I mean. But so so slim. Do you think most famous actresses/singers etc are like this? Maybe I’m very naive.

Exercise makes no substantial difference to ones weight. No SUBSTANTIAL difference. That's not true it is a combination of both. Dieting will only help so far, exercise with it can reshape your body and give you a healthier mindset.
As I said up thread my nephew eats 4500 calories with protein shakes daily he is lean with muscle and zero body fat.
If he ate those calories without his workout he'd be fat.
My friend a body builder eats 4000 when in training for she's lean a size 8 with a tiny rippled waist.
You can eat much more when burning it up.

@emeraldshamrock @fortunefaves Google the really interesting studies by Herman pontzer

Ingridla · 06/06/2021 22:36

@HandfulofDust

Yes, sorry, I do agree there are way to many very thin celebs, just I feel VB sticks out (pardon the pun) as the one who isn't naturally a teeny size as she looks a bit frail and it seems all those who've seen her IRL say she looks almost scarily thin, 9 yr old boy comparisons etc.

I guess the question we should be asking to get back on track from the mudslinging up thread is a, why does the camera add 10lb and b, why does the industry seemingly only employ very short people Wink

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 06/06/2021 22:42

Anna Kournikova was tiny and honestly you wouldn't have looked at her twice in the street in real life other than at her very long hair

What do you mean? It's a really odd statement.

CounsellorTroi · 06/06/2021 22:47

@ovensoff

Olivia Coleman looks healthy and slim. There is a photo of Kate Middleton in a green dress standing next to some women tennis players and she looks about half the size of them. The tennis players are slim and healthy, Kate looks as if she has an eating disorder.
There was a famous photo of Kate standing next to Nicole Kidman and she made NK look enormous.

@Bluntness100 sorry missed your post earlier, I'm in my mid 50's, had 3 children and run ultra marathons, not sure there's anything I need to see my GP about but thank you! It's funny how people just cannot accept that some people have small appetites and can't eat any more, it blows their minds

Timetopoeet · 06/06/2021 22:55

reallyreallyborednow

Coincidently (or is my phone listening to me again?), fb algorithms has shown me this picture of 2002 Kate Middleton. The dress here is a size 8.

Wow. She looks a LOT bigger than she does now

No she doesn't, ok she's slimmer now but also far more toned. She's a woman that clearly works out a lot and good on her, I think she's beautiful and healthy looking.

CounsellorTroi · 06/06/2021 22:55

@Roonerspismed

Well if they can have kids, they can’t be too thin as the body shuts down fertility first.

Most of the women mentioned here have had kids just fine.

I'm really not sure how this works. Birthrates in countries where malnutrition is endemic seem to be very high.
Tuckedinbelly · 06/06/2021 22:58

People give birth in war zones. In extreme poverty and famine. Addicted to heroin. The female body is amazing in what it can do in extreme circumstances. Of course anorexic women can have babies

dorangme · 06/06/2021 22:58

I think she's beautiful and healthy looking.

I don't think Kate Middleton looks healthy at all.

CounsellorTroi · 06/06/2021 23:09

*I suspect it's not that many actresses are thin but that most people now are overweight, so the perception of 'normal' has changed.

If you look back at films and newsreels from the 1940s and 50s when my mum was young, almost everyone was slim.*

a) there was food rationing, and b) I don't think people who were in films in the 40s and 50s can be taken as the average size of the general public then, any more than now!

CounsellorTroi · 06/06/2021 23:12

As many previous posts have said they look almost distorted and their heads look like they belong on a different body. Hence people being shocked.

Hands and feet can also look disproportionately large because the wrists and ankles are so tiny.

antsy · 06/06/2021 23:13

Diana Dors was not very slim. Barbara Windsor on carry on camping would be seen as fat now.

NewbieSM · 06/06/2021 23:30

@LaurieFairyCake

NewbieSM

According to the NHS BMI calculator you are underweight (and there are health risks associated with that, which I'm sure you know)

You are an 'outlier', very few women are as underweight as you are yet according to knowledgeable people on this thread you would have to lose a further 10 pounds to be thin enough to glow on camera Confused

I mean that's just a terrifying thought right ?

Me being an 'outlier' does not invalidate my existence does it? As another poster has stated bmi is not a very accurate measurement of health for everyone is it? All the females in my family are short and slim naturally due to genes and ethnicity. This does not make me underweight or unhealthy as some others believe.

Also I'm not 45 I'm 27 so perhaps my age has something to do with it. There are a variety of factors that determine weight and body shape, not all of which are in your control. Blanket offensive statements like being a munchkin, anorexic or childlike are body shaming and bullying.

Also my ability to maintain the exercise level I do surely negates the idea that a woman of my weight can not possibly be fit, strong and healthy. Slimness and strength are not mutually exclusive just as fatness and fitness aren't either?

There are ways to have this discussion in a constructive way but of course the majority of posters jump on the body bashing train. Do some of you really think that the tone of this thread would add any positive impetus to breakdown social norms of what is attractive and and how that affects your success? Or is it a chance to put us skinny bitches in our place?

Where is the sisterhood? Women lifting up other women? If this was thread about overweight women and their lifestyles' effect on our kids there would be uproar!

CounsellorTroi · 06/06/2021 23:33

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

Look at the reality of someone like Renee Zellwegger vs her Bridget Jones persona. Didn't she describe gorging on a diet of doughnuts and the like to achieve BJ overweight - the language she used was telling.
I thought she looked amazing in that bunny girl outfit. Certainly not fat. More Marilyn Monroe. She did say how wonderful it was to be "voluptuous".
antsy · 06/06/2021 23:43

@CounsellorTroi she did interviews after the film saying she had found it very hard being so "fat".

CounsellorTroi · 06/06/2021 23:47

@3Britnee

I remember 7-8.7st being the acceptable weight in the 80's and up to mid 90's. Anything above that was considered fat.
I was 8st 7lb on my wedding day in 1990. I wasn't a fat bride!
Jahebejrjr · 06/06/2021 23:48

I know a few actresses and without exception they are all incredibly beautiful and incredibly slim. They work hard at it and a lot smoke like chimneys to suppress their appetite.
I was once really slim, but had a really unhealthy diet and smoked a lot. I was always in pain with my stomach because it was so empty. I can’t imagine having to live like that forever. The slimmest person I know who has had a life long bad relationship with food once met Victoria Beckham and said VB made her feel fat.

lljkk · 07/06/2021 00:12

@CHILLLADIES

I'm surprised so many people know their waist and hip measurements. I wouldn't have a clue!
I went shopping recently. We can't try clothes on & some shops had no-return policies (charity shops). I needed to know my measurements to have a good chance of buying clothes that fit.

Might be cultural or generational, too. I forget what I weigh but knowing my measurements seems actually worthwhile knowing.

Frownette · 07/06/2021 01:46

@MmeLaraque

Goodness. I know the UK is an obesogenic country, but some of these comments are appalling. "A tiny size 8"? Some women are naturally petite and slim.

Imagine this conversation the other way around. Wouldn't happen, would it?

Oh I love you, thank you for that. I've lost a bit of weight due to illness recently but have always been what would be considered small.

You've given me encouragement to not judge myself.

FierceBarrie · 07/06/2021 02:15

There was a famous photo of Kate standing next to Nicole Kidman and she made NK look enormous.

The photo has been posted on this thread.

Nicole Kidman does not look ‘enormous’. She just doesn’t look as slim as Kate.

How does describing a very slim woman as ‘enormous’ help...?

It’s doing nothing but contributing to the very issue being debated on this thread.

And while I’m at it, can people please stop posting their weight, height and measurements? Nobody’s taking it in. Nobody cares about random old you. It’s a little bit embarrassing, and needy.

This thread is about famous people who look very different in real life, and the surprise to see this.

BalloonSlayer · 07/06/2021 07:08

How can someone declare that he dress student Kate wore at that fashion show "was a size 8" when a) it was homemade for the show by a student and b) it was a skirt that Kate decided to pull up under her armpits because she thought it looked better, or in a machiavellian attempt to become Queen, depending on your view. Grin

Peanutbutterandbananatoastie · 07/06/2021 07:34

I had never seen ‘the dress’ before. It’s awful, sorry student designer. She looks great though.

Darkbrownistheriver · 07/06/2021 07:54

@astonafar. I don’t disagree with you That was pretty much my point. I was disagreeing with a PP who disagreed with another poster about the fact that women generally weighed less in the 70s than now. I had an interesting conversation with the owner of a vintage clothing shop (1950s-70s) about it a couple of years ago. Very different builds - particularly shoe sizes.

problembottom · 07/06/2021 08:17

I interview celebrities (A-Z list) and the one that shocked me the most was Chloe Sims from Towie way back when the show was huge. I was 5ft 7 and a size 8 at the time. I had to put my arm around her for a picture and I honestly thought I might break her. She looked a size 8 onscreen but must have been a size 4, the famous size 0. TV really does add pounds.
