Someone has asked if they can buy my Instagram username?

Is this a thing?

It isn’t anything special, just my first initial and my surname eg AMysterioso. Someone whose username is _therealamysterioso has just followed me and sent me a DM asking if they can “buy this at”.

WTF??

How much for?? 😀

I wouldn't respond personally, I would even block or whatever it is you can do on Instagram lol. Bound to be some sort of scam, but then I am a very suspicious person by nature!

Terrazzo · 04/06/2021 21:44

They probably think they are / are going to be famous or build a big following.

JuniperBeer · 04/06/2021 21:44

Blocks and delete.
Change your password and make sure your account is secure and linked to your phone number.

According to his profile he’s a “Film Director - Music Producer - Songwriter - Audio Engineer - Rapper - Singer - Content Creator” from Miami. Just shy of 9k followers so obviously not setting the world on fire (says me with 400)

I buy social media handles as part of my job - I'm not saying this person isn't a scam, but I know it's pretty normal for people to want their brand to be consistent across platforms.
If you're open to selling then let them know the price. I usually pay between £50 and £1000 depending on the name and what it's being used for (usually as part of a branding package so needs to match the domain and other handles).

stuckinarutatwork · 04/06/2021 21:48

Do some research. Google them. If they're famous or up and coming, then it may be genuine.
Could be worth your while selling if the price is right, not least to avoid being mistaken for them constantly (anyone remember Mr John Lewis on Twitter: www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-46266698)

olderthanyouthink · 04/06/2021 21:52

I know someone who sold his, he had something like TheTerrier and someone or a company wanted it and paid a load for it (can't remember how much)

Eviethyme · 04/06/2021 22:01

Yes some companies even make @s just to sell

DogInATent · 04/06/2021 22:12

From what you've said it seems legit. The difficulty is valuing it.

TheChosenTwo · 04/06/2021 22:17

Someone could pay me £1,000,000 for mine but other than that they could piss off!
It’s not particularly exciting but it’s one (made up) word and no numbers of underscores and it’s the only one of its kind!
I’m quite attached to it and it’s not my real name, I just really liked it and I wouldn’t ever change it - unless I was given a million quid for it Grin

hellywelly3 · 04/06/2021 22:27

When websites started being a thing a lot of companies bought names off people, I think BT was one that paid big money to someone who it

hellywelly3 · 04/06/2021 22:27

Who owned bt. com

Sick · 04/06/2021 22:30

I've sold a few usernames on different platforms. You have to be careful how you do it, as straight up selling them is against the TOS.
