I'm looking at joining.
How much roughly is it a month?
Are spa facilities included in the price ?

I just looked around one in SW London. £150 a month for a flexible membership (that you can cancel with one months notice).

It was dingy and dirty. Definitely not worth it.

tinseloatcake · 04/06/2021 09:54

Was that the one above a shopping centre? I went there once as a visitor and thought it was average.

The one I am a member of is fab. £80 ish a month premium membership. Spas included, although I think at others there is another level of special spa. In a shire county in the Midlands.

emmathedilemma · 04/06/2021 10:03

There's a thread on this recently from someone considering joining the one at Corstorphine in Edinburgh and she was being quoted £88 a month but other people paid me. I'm always skeptical of places that don't quote membership prices on their website as it suggests they vary depending on when you join. I went to a gym like that years ago and new members were being offered deals to join for less than loyal members were paying, i managed to negotiate mine down but if they don't advertise it's hard to know you're not paying more than the going rate. Also watch the cancellation T&Cs as some of them have a min 12 month membership but a 2 month notification to cancel so you end up paying 14 months.

DLL membership prices depend on

  • which location you join at
  • whether you want rackets membership or just basic
  • whether you want peak times or only off peak
I've been a member for ~20 years, though my membership is currently frozen due to covid related reasons. I view it as an expensive luxury, but lovely.

Sauna / steam rooms are included in basic price.

BombyliusMajor · 04/06/2021 10:37

I just re-joined after leaving during lockdown 1. You can get an off-peak membership (not sure on price), a standard membership, or a Platinum membership with towel, rackets & spa included. I went for Platinum which was £165 (😱) plus £35 pm for my 4yo DS. So £200 pm total for the two of us.

I’ve been robbed, I’m sure, but fuck me it was worth it when it rained all month long in May. I work from the cafe bit quite a lot which is helpful too. DS loves the indoor splash pad - I can swim my lengths for ages while he’s in there. I plan to sign him up for a bunch of the kids’ classes so he can play / I can exercise then we can have a swim, have lunch, do soft play etc and have more options apart from going mad at home / freezing our tits off at a rainy playground when the weather’s shite, as it so often is.

The one I go to (Cambridge) is well maintained, has an outdoor pool, and it’s super easy to get into any exercise class you want. Its membership is relatively ethnically diverse as well.

One thing I would say is the spa is used very heavily by men. While nobody’s been anything but polite and courteous, I felt a tiny bit uncomfortable at first getting into the hydrotherapy pool with 6 huge, hairy, muscly blokes sitting in it messing around on their smartphones. If you are looking for a Sanctuary style spa experience, this may not quite hit the spot for you.

I also found that I didn’t feel very enthusiastic about sitting in a sauna / steam room given the year we’ve all had. I am double vaccinated and pretty relaxed about Covid & germs generally - but I found I couldn’t quite bring myself to be in a closed room full of other people’s recycled breath. it’s worth thinking about how much you will feel comfortable using the elements of a spa that felt so nice pre-Covid.

sociallydistained · 04/06/2021 10:50

I’ve just joined one at £100 a month and I have been loving it. However, I just realised the parking is monitored by one of those private companies and it’s Max 4 hours and I stayed over yesterday so am definitely getting a ticket. I’m really annoyed because on the tour I was presented the adults only lounge as a place I can work from and then have the gym and spa on sight. This sounded wonderful for me who has a dissertation coming up I thought I could spend about 6 hours there and do everything and yet that clearly isn’t the case.

It has a glorious sunbathing spot by the pool I’ve been using but I am so pissed off about the parking. I am going to scout a place I can leave my car and walk 🙈

TeenMinusTests · 04/06/2021 11:01

socially Ask in the club re the car park. They possibly have an issue with people using it as a car park for work days. i would think they wouldn't want people to cut short a real visit.

emmathedilemma · 04/06/2021 12:06

@sociallydistained definitely talk to reception about the car park. My club has signs up saying max stay of 3 hours but it's because they had issues with members parking there all day while they're at work nearby. I'm often there for more than 3 hours using the facilities and never had an issue although I don't think it's monitored other than by staff maybe doing a sweep round if they suspect people are abusing the system.

BombyliusMajor · 04/06/2021 13:39

At my club you can tell them at reception that you plan to be more than 4 hours and they give you an exemption from the limit.

sociallydistained · 04/06/2021 17:12

Okay thanks for that. I saw the sign when I left and I think it’s a private company and googled and someone at another club got a ticket. If/when I get the ticket I will talk to David Lloyd and I will talk to them in future about days I plan to stay longer then.

floppybit · 18/07/2021 18:09

Just been for a look around the one in Trafford, Manchester. I seem to have been quoted a lot more than others are paying. I'm really in two minds. The outdoor pool is a massive bonus but there were no loungers and nowhere to sit. Outdoor seating in garden areas didn't look very comfortable. I just don't know....

floppybit · 18/07/2021 18:11

This is what I was quoted

Anyone a member at David Lloyd ?
CovidCorvid · 18/07/2021 18:21

I pay £96 a month normal membership, platinum which includes tennis is £125. We don’t have a spa at ours, just a hot tub and a sauna. The rates are different at different clubs, there’s an unofficial fb group which is worth joining to ask about a specific club.

Ours is a bit rubbish, not many classes (even before covid). They’ve removed Les Mills classes and replaced them with their own inferior version to save money. Hard to book into the classes, tiny gym with not much equipment, two small studios. I used to pay the extra for tennis but could never book a court so stopped the tennis. If it wasn’t for the fact that it’s significantly closer than any other gym I wouldn’t go. Plus I have friends there and do like the socialising aspect of things.

sociallydistained · 18/07/2021 18:27

Since my last post here I found I was pregnant, started feeling terrible and the thought of going there is making me feel sick 😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ and now I’m locked into £100 a month and I haven’t been going 😩 no way I can get out of it unless I have complications in pregnancy which I obviously don’t wish for! So worried about when I’m on maternity, my entire circumstances have changed. It’s so annoying I can’t use the spa features now. I just hope I can start to go and use the gym/pool etc and at least make the worst of a bad situation.

floppybit · 18/07/2021 18:35

@sociallydistained Well first of all, Congratulations!! Does yours have an outdoor pool? Hopefully you will feel well enough to have a dip soon. How about yoga and Pilates?

sociallydistained · 18/07/2021 18:43

Hey @floppybit it was indeed a bit of a shock as you can tell from the ill timed DL sign up 😂 yes it does have an outdoor pool and I have some time off work in august so hope to get back into the swing of things!

ChampagneLassie · 02/08/2021 12:26

Useful to know @BombyliusMajor we viewed Cambridge last week...we were tempted but it is so expensive. I just found out I'm pregnant (ye-hey!), so I think I'll give a miss until post baby

JanetandJohn500 · 02/08/2021 14:24

I'm in Liverpool and pay £76 for platinum membership. It's worth every penny to me.
I got into it by doing a mystery shop there and got 3 months membership and the joining fee paid. I had to write a couple of reports, do a couple of classes and sat lunch there a couple of times (paid for). It was well worth it! I've been there 2.5 years now and go at least every other day.
