Sleeping with the window open at night

Icepops · 04/06/2021 08:12

Person A likes the window closed at night as doesn’t like the risk of bugs/spiders etc.

Person B finds it hard to sleep in the heat and having the window open all night helps.

How do you find a compromise? At the moment person A/B is sleeping in a separate room but neither can do this indefinitely as it means bunking in with a child.

How to find a compromise? Bug nets have been suggested but are apparently unsightly. Hmm

I was going to suggest a net but if that’s not an option there is no compromise I don’t think. I always have the window open unless it’s freezing, I can’t say I’ve ever noticed bugs coming in!

VerbenaGirl · 04/06/2021 08:21

Not sure if it’s any better on the bug front, but we usually open ours for a while before bed - which cools the room right down, then shut them to sleep (more due to noise). We also have a Dyson fan, which helps.

Sunshinesandice · 04/06/2021 08:22

We have just brought a bugs net and it’s the best thing I ever did.

AllIknowsofar · 04/06/2021 08:23

Ex and I used to sleep in separate rooms in the summer as we could not find a compromise(not a bugs issue though.) I think if you really can’t agree, the person who likes the window closed wins.

TheFlis12345 · 04/06/2021 08:24

Who is saying nets are unsightly? If it’s person a they are being ridiculous and they need to find a solution as nets are a good one.

nordica · 04/06/2021 08:26

You can get bug nets or screens that attach with velcro so could be taken down for daytime if the way it looks is really an issue.

JhsLs · 04/06/2021 08:39

Buy a fan

Grapesoda7 · 04/06/2021 08:39

Could you get a ceiling fan? Not the same as fresh air I know.

Jasmine245 · 04/06/2021 08:42

I have shutters in front of my bedroom windows. Even with them closed you get a bit of air from an open window but the bugs don't get in.

Bluntness100 · 04/06/2021 08:43

I think you need to get a net and put up with the unsightly ness.

FrumpyBetty · 04/06/2021 08:59

I have nets on several of my windows in the house. Best thing I ever did.

RumJerrySailorRum · 04/06/2021 09:03

Person A needs to get a grip.

Bugs and spiders will not be swarming just because the windows are open at night.

squashyhat · 04/06/2021 09:06

Night flying insects are generally attracted to light. Open the window after all the lights are turned off.

MrMeeseekslookatme · 04/06/2021 09:06

Buy a fan or air conditioning.

Bugs and spiders don't wait by open windows waiting to come in. Personally, I'd be more worried about burglars.

delilahbucket · 04/06/2021 09:08

We have the windows open all day, a 2.5 tog duvet and if it's really warm frozen hot water bottles. We would have the window open but the traffic noise is too much.

Rebornagain · 04/06/2021 09:14

Person A needs to grow a pair and grow up.

How does Person A sleep at night with all those nasty creepy crawlies around

billy1966 · 04/06/2021 09:17

Window open here all year.

No issue with bugs ever.

Get the net or tell the wimp sleep elsewhere 😁

Yellowcrockpot · 04/06/2021 09:19

Bug net.
Or a fan?

Our window also open all year around. No bug issues!

ApolloandDaphne · 04/06/2021 09:21

I also sleep with my window open all year round and the bug incursion is minimal. And I live in the countryside so plenty of bugs outside. I am with the window open person!

AGirlsGotToDo · 04/06/2021 09:22

Definitely get a fan! Person A is being ridiculous though.

lovelsa · 04/06/2021 09:25

We have screens on our windows. I got them on Amazon and they are just attached via a strip of Velcro. I made sure to get a white mesh, so it's harder to see. Definitely recommend it.

I'm American and window screens are normally standard, so surprised me when I moved to the UK. I've made sure to our screens on all our windows so we can get air in the house sans bugs.

Neighneigh · 04/06/2021 09:26

Bugs go to light - just keep the window shut until you turn the lights off. Personally I'd rather my husband sleep in the shed than close my bedroom window. I even had it open when it was minus 4 - weirdly because there was no wind, it wasn't actually that cold. But no way am I closing it at the moment!

I agree. And conversely, bugs don't need wide open windows to get in anyway. They get in vents and through doors and windows that are open in the daytime, on the people or animals that enter the house and all manner of other ways.
Londonnight · 04/06/2021 09:29

My window is wide open at night, even during winter. I can't bear a hot bedroom. I have seen no evidence of an increase of any bugs or insects at all. It's usually light that attracts them, so if your curtains are closed and lights off, it shouldn't be a problem.

Quite. We sleep in a loft room which is roasting year round. Window open probably 340 nights of the year as the heat and stuffiness is unbearable.

Spiders and bugs are not infesting our bedroom. Get a grip, person A.
