Sleeping with the window open at night

Icepops · 04/06/2021 08:12

Person A likes the window closed at night as doesn’t like the risk of bugs/spiders etc.

Person B finds it hard to sleep in the heat and having the window open all night helps.

How do you find a compromise? At the moment person A/B is sleeping in a separate room but neither can do this indefinitely as it means bunking in with a child.

How to find a compromise? Bug nets have been suggested but are apparently unsightly. Hmm

I agree person A needs to get a grip but they should also look at insect repellents/traps if it will ease their anxiety about insects.

Frankly I could be covered in spiders on a night but if I'm asleep and they're gone before I wake up I just simply won't care at all.

Sparrowsong · 04/06/2021 09:39

@RumJerrySailorRum

Person A needs to get a grip.

Bugs and spiders will not be swarming just because the windows are open at night.

This.

Also if you don't want bugs, encourage spiders. Keep a few in the house and they do a marvellous pest control job!

OrangePowder · 04/06/2021 09:40

I like the window open. I've never had a problem with bugs. The dawn chorus and the milkman are annoying though.

Isn't life full of compromises?

RestingCatsBumFace · 04/06/2021 09:42

I have velcro on the window frames and stick plain net curtains to it. Easy to take down and wash. I did it at first as there was a wasps nest above my window and I knew they would move on for the following year, just didn't want them in the house. However, there are still flies, and moths and mosquitoes that I prefer to keep out, so the nets stayed.

Apparently black bug screens don't show as much, or make the room dark, people say this a lot but I've not tried it.

UhtredRagnarson · 04/06/2021 09:43

So does the person who is afraid of bugs never allow the windows open at all or do they believe bugs only exist at night?

EversoDelighted · 04/06/2021 09:46

I agree with not opening the windows till
lights out, but then you don't get to sit reading in bed with a lovely cool breeze.

rhowton · 04/06/2021 09:47

I do in the winter but birds are arseholes in the summer and insist on chirping at 4am... little twats

LakeShoreD · 04/06/2021 09:51

Person A needs to get a grip. And possibly a cat because they’ll make swift work of any bugs that get into the house. Even bug screens only do so much. We had them on all the windows when we lived in the US, and rarely opened the windows on hot days as we had a/c and the buggers still got in on occasion. They didn’t last long thanks to the cat though!

Juno231 · 04/06/2021 10:00

Person A needs to grow up really, it's an irrational fear

We have the windows open all spring, summer and autumn usually and never find any bugs in the room?

1n5piration · 04/06/2021 10:03

We have mosquito nets on all of the windows we leave open at night; three bedrooms and kitchen have a roll up one, the bathroom has a panel one that can be taken out to clean and the patio doors have a sliding one.

Whoever said they are unsightly is being daft. You can see through them , you get used to them and don't notice after a while and you don't get eaten at night.

TheChosenTwo · 04/06/2021 10:09

We keep our bedroom window all year round except for when it’s excessively window as it pushes our wooden shutters open, maybe only 5 nights a year.
Dh prefers it cooler, I have actually gotten used to it and now struggle to sleep if it’s not open.
I do have a thick duvet on all year round though, don’t switch to a summer one.
We got the bug screens for the dds as they were also scared of bugs coming in and wouldn’t open their windows ever. Teen rooms need airing (well, all rooms do but especially teenagers rooms Grin ) and although they’re unsightly from the outside they’re hardly visible when we’re sitting out in the garden. They’re also mainly hidden on the inside due to the shutters.
The person moaning about wanting the window open but not liking the idea of the bug screens is being awkward!

safariboot · 04/06/2021 10:13

Stop whining about looks and get the bloody bug screens so you can both sleep in cool bug-free comfort.

SirVixofVixHall · 04/06/2021 10:15

Insect screen shutters.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/06/2021 10:15

Person A is being unreasonable. Unless you live in the middle of a forest

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 04/06/2021 10:18

Unless you live in the jungle there is no risk of bugs and spiders coming in. Nobody can sleep in the heat so person A needs to get over themselves one way or another.

starrynight21 · 04/06/2021 10:19

Insect screens on the windows ? I'm in Australia and they are universal here because of flies and mosquitoes. But if I was back in the UK I'd get them anyway, for all bugs.

Mandalay246 · 04/06/2021 10:19

I have my window open every night and no bugs come through it. Person A is being ridiculous.

Firstruleofsoupover · 04/06/2021 10:32

Frozen hot water bottles! That’s a very interesting idea. I get terrible hot some summer nights. Would you fill it, say, half full? Is there a risk of the rubber failing as a consequence of freezing?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/06/2021 10:35

I think person A the OP is being entirely unreasonable.

We have our windows open year round and have not noticed any bugs at all.

HavelockVetinari · 04/06/2021 10:35

I used ice packs from the freezer, wrapped in thin towel. Really effective!

TheOrigRights · 04/06/2021 10:48

I'm not fearful of bugs, I just hate them buzzing and dive bombing and trying to read my Kindle. It's the crane flies in the autumn which give me the rage.

I tend to throw the windows open when it cools down in the evening, and keep the lights off until I go to bed, close them while I get ready for bed and read and then open them as I'm about to sleep.

BertieBotts · 04/06/2021 10:55

Bugs won't come in as long as there is no light in the room as there is nothing to attract them.

Spiders can fit through tiny gaps and probably live inside your walls anyway and so will come in regardless of whether the window is open or closed.

BalthazarImpresario · 04/06/2021 10:59

I’ve got some white bug nets stuck to mine with a Velcro and I can’t see them but I do have voiles, I would ask are the windows open in the day? Bugs etc still get in and lurk .

I have the window open year round and the bug net is to stop the cat jumping out

Daisy829 · 04/06/2021 11:00

Window open all year here too. I can’t stand the thought of it having fresh air in our bedroom. All that smelly sleep breath!

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/06/2021 11:01

B&M have the window screens at the moment for £2.99. Problem solved
