Has anyone paid for tuition for their children and realised it didn't work?

Is your tutor a qualified teacher with recent experience in schools? Is he/she familiar with exam content and what examiners are looking for?

I tutor but also teach. There are a lot of tutors out there who may well be experts in their field but who have no idea about pedagogy, exam requirements or anything else. You do need to be careful who you’re hiring and for what purpose.

Why do you ask?

You want tales of bad tutoring? Or children that are unteachable? 🤔 What’s your experience?

I've had 2 tutors for my DD (secondary level) and they have both been excellent.
I chose them as existing or recent teachers who knew the exam spec and whose approach I thought would work well with my DD.
If I had a tutor and I thought it didn't work for whatever reason, I'd terminate the tutoring.

Nope, it's been money well spent for us. We picked a teacher who specialises in SEN and in particular has experience of bright DCs with SN. She has plugged gaps (due to teachers switching mid year, as well as lockdown), improved DC's confidence, and given DC fun work to challenge her. With the tutor's help, we are beginning to figure out the causes of DC's struggles and the school are now 'on it' (well masked, so it hadn't been apparent to school until raised and pushed).
