What would you do - sold item on FB marketplace

Last month I sold a cordless vacuum cleaner in perfect working order for a lot less than it was worth because I needed the cash. Someone bought it, took it away and I spent the money on petrol. The next day she messaged me and told me that it wasn't working and she wanted to return it for a refund.

I told her I'd spent the money but if she could wait until the end of the month when I got paid I'd refund her then. She never replied to this message and I've not heard from her since.

I've budgeted the money to pay her back but honestly I'm living hand to mouth at the moment and could really do without paying her back if she's not chasing for it.

So how long should I leave it before assuming she's changed her mind about the refund? Or is it the right thing to message her and ask if she still wants to return it?

If i'd sold something on Facebook market place that worked when I'd sold it there would be no way I'd be offering a refund.

FuckyouCovid21 · 03/06/2021 20:57

Nah, no refund. It was working when you sold it, do not engage

jojododobobo · 03/06/2021 21:00

Deffinatly don't refund her! She could have had a broken one at home the whole time and bought yours to swap then ask for a refund for all you know! Unlikely but you just don't know. She should have checked it there and then in front of you.

Anything bought on fb marketplace is sold as seen as far as I'm concerned! It's the risk you take buying anything second hand.

CharlotteRose90 · 03/06/2021 21:06

Nope I wouldn’t refund it if it was definitely working when you sold it. If I buy anything like that or sell anything I always ask to show or check it’s working in front of them.

CallMeCleo · 03/06/2021 21:21

Just block her.

MimiSunshine · 03/06/2021 21:24

Sold as seen. It was working when you sold it, she could have done anything to it once she left your house.

She’s not contacted you since (and you should never have offered a payday refund) so just block and ignore.

I wouldn't refund. If you want a hoover etc guaranteed to work for a set amount of time buy a new one with a warranty on it.

Sold a cordless hoover on market place yesterday morning. The lady told me her partner would be collecting and could he test it before buying it. I said yes and he came tested it on the rug and then handed over the money and off he went.
An hour later she messaged me to say it was spitting out and wasn't working. Which it 100% wasn't as I'd had it working and uploaded a video when I listed it! She has also said she has taken it to bits and put it back together! She's asked to return it for a refund.

Where do I stand? Do I accept it back?

Many thanks! 🙂

Absolutely no chance I'd be giving her a refund. It worked when you sold it.
