Dyson cool fans - are they actually any good?

Do these actually work? Ie better than a normal big standard fan?

We have a very warm city flat which is in a noisy area. The flat is very warm plus south facing so really hard to keep cool. 1yo baby's windows need to be kept closed at night because of all the traffic noise sound of drug dealers meeting up and general sounds. (We are looking to move before anyone asks)!

I'm looking at the Dyson cool fans as we can't have air conditioning fitted. Was looking at them over and above a normal fan. Can anyone tell me if they're any good? They're bloody expensive and I don't want to buy one only to find out it's nothing special.

They are just a fan. No cooling. And very expensive. There are tricks like putting a bowl of ice cubes in front of a normal fan.

Aria20 · 03/06/2021 14:52

Don't waste your money we bought one and returned it after a week as it was same as a normal fan. Argos do portable air con machines that you fill up with cold water that are much better!

Watchingthetelly · 03/06/2021 14:53

They’re ok... they don’t make a significant impact

Why not get an actual cooling unit?

Aria20 · 03/06/2021 14:56

@FeatheredHope that's the one thing we got last year after returning the dyson

FeatheredHope · 03/06/2021 14:57

Hahahaha @Aria20 so I really was bang on the money!

TaraR2020 · 03/06/2021 14:58

I used one at parents, you get more cooling for less noise- as far as fans go it was much better...Was much better for keeping on at might.

I baulk at the price though! Keeping an eye out for similar with a cheaper brand or getting one 2ndhand.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/06/2021 14:59

I actually think it's an advertising standards issue which makes me angry.

Also I hate Mr. Dyson because of his brexit betrayal. Arsehole. Wouldn't give him money.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/06/2021 15:01

We bought one and thought it was quite good. Then went to stay with a friend’s granny who had a £10 one from Asda and it was significantly better, more blowy and not that much noisier

rosesarered321 · 03/06/2021 15:03

We have a meaco fan, it's excellent.

TaraR2020 · 03/06/2021 15:04

@ShirleyPhallus thats good to know!

Floralnomad · 03/06/2021 15:06

We have them and I love them , I don’t think they are probably any better than a normal fan but they are quieter , they look better and they aren’t massive dust traps which I find usual fans are . For those reasons they are worth the money to me .

TerribleCustomerCervix · 03/06/2021 15:12

I mean they look slightly better than a normal fan, but not enough to justify the 10x price tag.

There’s some very unobtrusive column fans from Argos and John Lewis at a fraction of the cost.

I came to recommend the Meaco. Really good, quiet but very powerful.

Also, I won't put a penny of my money in Dysons pocket!

Howshouldibehave · 03/06/2021 15:17

We have 2 Meaco fans-they are absolutely brilliant. The Dyson fans they have at DH’s work are rubbish!

Bargebill19 · 03/06/2021 15:17

We’ve found those tower fans are much better than the traditional pedestal type. Cheap to buy, easy to clean and don’t look horrible. Take up minimal floor space. £30 bargain.

Like this one. I took it apart at the weekend to clean it and it's designed really well, was very easy to clean the inside.

Kyph · 03/06/2021 15:19

A fan is a fan, they just move the air around they don't cool the room. If you sit in front of a fan you will feel cooler but for actual cooling you need air con. So if you want a fan just buy one you like.
I bought a mobile air con a couple of years ago and it's the best thing ever. Only use it a few weeks in a year but I can put it on in my super heated attic bedroom and in a couple of hours it's arctic in there.

Nor me. He wants to make the UK poorer, why would I make him richer?

MistySkiesAfterRain · 03/06/2021 20:11

Same, also in new build south facing. My neighbour has had two children, no idea how they coped but bumped into them recently and they said they had an aircon and stick it out the door. They also have made a make shift awning on their balcony presumably to block the direct sun coming in the glass.

I just bought the Meaco Cool BTU 9000. If I had the money I would have gone 10000 or 12000 (I have approx 16-18 square metre open plan room). It makes it more pleasant. I am using it with a turbo floor fan, about 40 quid from Dyas I think, to circulate the cool air better. Neither are the quietest. Ebay is good if you don't want to pay full price.

Have ordered black out blinds for other rooms.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 03/06/2021 20:13

Meaco Cool comes with a velcro window kit and 1.8m tube (most are 1.5m). Have velcroed my whole balcony door ajar in this white material, like some strange wedding marquee decor, and have to unvelcro it like getting out a tent to step out onto my scorching balcony. Its an odd existence wfh atm!

5zeds · 03/06/2021 20:18

We have a portable air conditioner. If you leave the doors open in a flat it would probably cool the entire place. It’s been going strong for about 16 years, and lives in the shed in the winter.

randomkey123 · 03/06/2021 20:22

I've got a Dyson fan in our bedroom and absolutely love it (the tower one). It's so quiet, makes a lovely swooshing sound so you can keep it on overnight and it's really effective at moving the air around. I take it to work on hot days. We've had hundreds of other fans over the years and the Dyson is hands down the best. I'm just considering another for the living room.

violetbunny · 04/06/2021 07:16

We have one. It is still a fan - not an air conditioner - so it can't cool the air any more than a regular fan.
We like it's because it's quiet and also bladeless (so is safer for little fingers or paws). We use it in our bedroom in summer. But if you need significant cooling then i I would buy a standalone A/C unit.
