If you don't live in a standard "normal" way, how do you live?

Curious to know how people live if you don't live in "standard" way, how do you live? ie you live in a commune, you travel the world with your family etc etc

I find a lot of these interesting. Especially interested in the early retirement thing. I do not want to retire but DH does. I fear he may be bored and we might fight! Grin

Logmein · 02/06/2021 18:59

I don't know if this is classed as different but my DH lives in another country for 6 months of the year and has for most of our marriage.
I visit once of twice in that time for a long weekend, he doesn't come back in that time, not armed forces and he's British so he's not going back home, he has a unique job that I won't say as there are only a handful of people in the world that do it if that.
We don't see each other often.
I love it 😀

@Sometimesfraught82
Yes that’s right
Dh took early retirement
The reason why we don’t live abroad is because I’m a sentimental old fool and love my family to bits
Even the 8 winter weeks abroad are spread over three holidays

Needanewhat · 02/06/2021 19:01

I home educate my DC, for some reason that's seen as being pretty hippy and alternative 🤷‍♀️

I did that for a while as well but it’s only the youngest who’s autistic that has never been to school. He was much better off at home with me and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

shewalkslikerihanna · 02/06/2021 19:06

Since 1979 I’ve had various holiday homes, some here and some in different countries bar one year when I was in the middle of a bitter divorce
By then I’d met my soon to be second husband and staying at his house for the weekend filled the gap nicely till we got another holiday home

I’ve been extremely lucky

I moved last year to the far north of Norway, up inside the Arctic Circle. I work as a government vet here and sometimes spend my days driving through spectacular scenery, still amazed that someone is paying me for the privilege!

flippertygibbit · 02/06/2021 19:09

Mostly standard, live in a 2 bed ex council house, just DP and I and the dogs however due to a seriously large inheritance I could easily buy the whole street......... Don't get me wrong I'd rather have my aunt back but I quite like being 'council'........

shewalkslikerihanna · 02/06/2021 19:09

@DesertRoze
Three of my Grandchildren have never been to school
They are 16, 14 and 11
They have had the most amazing childhood
Forest schools, lots of camping, home Ed camps, going to Florida in term time when it’s cheaper but yes probably seen as very bohemian

shewalkslikerihanna · 02/06/2021 19:13

Wow flibbertygibbert
That’s amazing
Yes a rather nice inheritance does oil the wheels.
Me too.
Miss mum and aunt so much
5 and 6 years now for them both

I often think about buying a business but honestly
Do I want the stress
No
I would like my own land though

UncleBobb · 02/06/2021 19:13

@Logmein that sounds an amazing set up!

SeaToSki · 02/06/2021 19:15

My family ski every weekend in the winter

Aprilwasverywet · 02/06/2021 19:15

MaMelon · 02/06/2021 19:16

alreadytaken · 02/06/2021 19:17

@AnyFucker Nothing interesting - like most mumsnet threads then

2homesandhappy · 02/06/2021 19:19

@shewalkslikerihanna

Live between two homes March to end of November Not just talking weekends Spend more time at our holiday home then our normal home It’s about 5/2 or 4/3 Bloody love it Had a cracking 5 days this week Then in the winter spend about 8 weeks abroad

Probably nothing very unusual in that though to be fair

I do something similar I live in two houses miles apart and currently the split between each is about 55/45 and I have organised my life so that I work part time in both locations. I could live more or less in either locations or live permanently in one, I can also extend or shorten my stay in either by a day or a week or even a month whatever I want to do currently this arrangement suits me very well. Kids grown up so that's why its doable. Best decision I ever made Ive never been happier.
Aquafizzle · 02/06/2021 19:20

@desertroze you sound like just the type of person I'd love to be seated next to at a dinner party !!! I love your sense of adventure and you must have amazing stories.

Svag · 02/06/2021 19:21

Wow @DesertRoze
I’d love to hear more of your story
Please

Oilyvoir · 02/06/2021 19:26

I live with and parent my grandson aged 5. His mum is my adopted daughter. This afternoon my daughter's biological father and grandson's biological grandfather did my garden and yesterday my grandson commented on how he was on a walk with 'nanny and grandad' - nanny and grandad have never been intimate in any kind of way and never will be. Grandad has been in and out of prison and nanny is a very law abiding citizen. Nanny became mummy's mummy on account of grandad's behaviour.
My lodger (and good friend from years ago) is in Brighton this week with his male partner. Up until last year (he's late 30s) he was in a long term heterosexual relationship. My previous lodger moved in with her boyfriend and 9 months later moved out with her girlfriend - there's obviously something about my spare room.
If I wasn't so 'normal' I would right a book on my unusual life as an adoptive parent.

Building work and installing kitchens is hardly unique
MaMelon · 02/06/2021 19:29

Absolutely stunning Svag! Smile

Hawkins001 · 02/06/2021 19:30

Me, I'm strange, very few close trusted friends, motto, most people wears a mask, prefer my ladies people I can trust and have a connection with. I have some basic hobbies, in general, nothing is what it seems kinda philosophy.
