Dd and I are home alone this evening. What classic girly movie shall we watch 😁?

Instant Family

I watched Dirty Dancing with my 11 and 13 yo DDs recently. It's a 12 and the abortion storyline is handled well and they'd seen similar on Call the Midwife. I'd assumed Baby is 17 in the film (there's a lot of talk about going to University) but Jennifer Grey was 27 when she played her, Patrick Swayze was in his early 30s but it's not unreasonable to assume that he too was playing a character 10 years younger than his actual age. My DDs thought he was really old though (I was a teenager in the 80s when it came out and already a big fan of him thanks to North and South and didn't think he was 'old'). The sex scene in the film is actually very tame. Generally I think the film is very feminist and a million times better than the very dodgy Pretty Woman storyline.

We watched Ferris Bueller with them recently as well, the 15 rating is for the swearing which I don't have an issue with them watching. Violence or sexually explicit content is not acceptable though at their age.

We switched The Breakfast Club off. Really unsuitable for younger teens - misogynistic bullying and drugs. Just no. That really is a 15.

50 First Dates
Maid in Manhattan
2 weeks Notice
Devil Wears Prada
The Notebook

BrownEyedGirl80 · 03/06/2021 22:42

I meant it to say : it's been a while since I watched most of these so they might be totally inappropriate but not from what I can remember

@BrownEyedGirl80

Thelma and Louise.
no. it's PG15. definitely not suitable for a 12 yo.

bloody great film though

@BrownEyedGirl80

Thelma and Louise.
Thelma and Louise have a very racy sex scene no?

My dds LOVE Oceans Eight. It is really good fun with very cool heist, all female cast of badass women, and fun dialogue. The clothes on some of them are drool worthy....

musthavebeenlove · 04/06/2021 04:00

Practical Magic was one of my favorites at that age.

Also La vita e bella, Mystic Pizza, A million ways to die in the west.

‘Taken’ might be a tad too much for her age but it’s a really good movie and if I had a daughter, I would let her watch it because the message it delivers is an important one.
Be careful as a young girl on your own.

RosaBudDrood · 04/06/2021 04:39

There's also Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen on Disney Plus.

Lindsey Lohan is fab in it. Love it.

MsTSwift · 04/06/2021 06:48

Thelma and Louise for a 12 year old?!?

THisbackwithavengeance · 04/06/2021 07:08

DD (11) and DS (13) and I watched The Yes Day which is on Netflix and we enjoyed it.

MsTSwift · 04/06/2021 07:23

Mine rejected that as too babyish. It’s a tricky age !

Might have to watch that. My DDs really enjoyed the all-female Ghostbusters, that might be an option?
