Dd and I are home alone this evening. What classic girly movie shall we watch 😁?

Dirty Dancing

MsTSwift · 02/06/2021 23:57

Ghostbusters 2
Oceans Eleven
Fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe
Whip it

Hell would freeze over before I sat down and watched / endorsed Pretty fucking Woman with any daughter of mine. Appalling message.

Sparklingbrook · 03/06/2021 00:03

I see you are all sorted but I never tired of introducing my DSs to 80s movies

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Back to the Future
Pretty in Pink

They loved Wayne's World too.

Sparklingbrook · 03/06/2021 00:04

@ColinKnocksTwoPence

Dirty Dancing
I wouldn't want to watch that with a 12 year old DD, it's all a bit sleazy for that age.
JMAngel1 · 03/06/2021 04:35

Gobsmacked at Pretty Woman - she is 12!!

AuntLucy · 03/06/2021 07:19

We went with Miss Congeniality which has stood the test of time very well.

I liked Pretty Woman at 15 but I think the lengthy prelogue I would be obliged to give about how "this is not a realistic depiction of life as a prostitute living with a drug addict in the US, no man who buys women for sex is ever the good-guy, and that even at the end the relationship is unhealthy, based on an unsustainable power imbalance and she'd be better off getting a day-job and some therapy", might somehow spoil the romance 😁

It does have an AMAZING soundtrack though 😁

I wouldn't watch pretty woman or dirty dancing with my 12 yr old!

AuntLucy · 03/06/2021 07:40

Yes, Dirty Dancing is also on hold til she's 14/15. Another great movie with an amazing soundtrack, that needs a prologue. Better than Pretty Woman though - at least the female lead is educated, decisive, strong-willed and choosing financial independence. And it handles the themes of rich vs poor, and America's abortion law and how it disproportionately enrisks low income women, pretty well.

For future - Now and Then would be perfect as well.

Sparklingbrook · 03/06/2021 07:46

My problem with Dirty Dancing came when I had my own children I think.
Taking your teenage DD on a nice family holiday and they start sneaking off to sleep with the sleazy older dance instructor who has been around the block a bit? I wouldn't be happy with that at all! Baby's Dad should have gone and knocked Johnny out really. The end.

One of my favourite films is St Elmo's Fire but watching as an adult it's a terrible film when you pick it apart. All of the characters are awful.

SoulAsylumm · 03/06/2021 07:49

The Truman show

Back to the Future

Ground Hog Day

StCharlotte · 03/06/2021 08:03

For next time maybe Dumplin'?

MsTSwift · 03/06/2021 08:07

Re watched Dirty Dancing and actually felt it had held up quite well. Yes it’s sexual but basically her sexual awakening and it’s consensual and positive about that. It’s all about trying to do the right thing.

Far prefer it to Pretty bloody Woman!

MsTSwift · 03/06/2021 08:09

Isn’t it romantic is brilliant

I think my problem is definitely a lot with the Johnny character sleeping with guests (which wasn't allowed) and in truth he should have left Baby well alone. If she had had a sexual awakening that was consensual and positive with maybe another guest on that holiday I'd feel better about that. Grin But the whole premise of the film would have been ruined.

Maybe it should just be taken at face value and not thought about too much? Grin

MsTSwift · 03/06/2021 12:01

What’s depressing is in my day it was seen as extremely racy and you were strictly not allowed to see it until you were 15 now it’s a 12 and seems quite tame in comparison to other stuff!

Lucked · 03/06/2021 17:55

Sisterhood of the travelling pants.

AuntLucy · 03/06/2021 21:04

@MsTSwift and @granhands1 thank you for the recommendation of Whip It. I had never heard if it. We watched it tonight - super movie, totally hit the spot 😬

Yes to Dumpling, brilliant film

Also Hunt for the Wilder people is lovely

Pans Labrynth is quite dark and Books art my dd 14 turned off as really uncomfortable with all the references to masturbating to teddies early on - think it's for older audience

JoyOrbison · 03/06/2021 21:10

Stand By Me

Goonies

My Girl

Return to Oz

As far as I’m aware they don’t ever directly mention Baby’s age in the film either. Jennifer Grey is very clearly an adult (and doesn’t look much younger than Patrick Swayze!) so I imagine most 12 year olds would just see it as a consensual relationship between two adults. Which it is, essentially.

We watched it with my partner’s daughter (who is a similar age to the OP’s daughter) and parts of it went over her head a bit but she still really enjoyed it. The only part that she was really ‘affected’ by was Penny’s abortion, but only because she was cross that going to a proper doctor to have it done safely wasn’t an option.

Pretty Woman is very different though. I loved it when I was in my early teens but I now accept that it’s very problematic.

the breakfast club or Ferris Buellers day off

Do you think Breakfast Club might be a bit much for a 12 year old in parts?
MsTSwift · 03/06/2021 21:36

Whip it is fab we all enjoyed it

Thought of another few (my two 12 and 14 but quite a grown up end of 12)

The Blind Side
Freedom Writers
The Help
