DH has done something to his shoulder and can't sleep

Not sure where to post this, but last week dh woke up and had a sore shoulder - his arm started shaking when he lifted it to a certain point but it wasn't overly painful, more just like a dead weight. It was fine after a day or two.

This weekend he has been crippled with the pain. He can't sleep - at all, he can't move it and he's in agony. He said the pain is like he has broken it but he can't see how that would have happened. He has not slept at all tonight and is down on the couch, propped up and watching tv in the hope he will fall asleep. I offered to take him to a&e as he's in so much pain but he said probably best to take him to the minor injuries unit in the morning - does that seem like the right course of action? I feel so bad for him that I'm up in bed and he's down on the couch whimpering with the pain.

He's used the ibuprofen gel and taking some paracetamol. We don't have anything stronger in the house and he's asthmatic so needs to watch what he takes. He won't let me sit with him as I'm in early stages of pregnancy and wants me to get to bed and sleep.

Any advice?

It could be a frozen shoulder. My husband gets these and is sadly more prone to them because he’s diabetic but I think anyone can get them. He usually gets a physio referral to confirm then a steroid injection to help manage the pain.

He's treating it with an ice pack periodically throughout the day, but the pain has got so bad throughout the night. Worried sick about him :(

I would speak to your doctor. Certainly if it’s a frozen shoulder they can be incredibly painful and can unfortunately affect sleep. I have to help DH put his coat on etc as he can’t lift his arms to do it. It does stop eventually but needs managing in the meantime. Good luck x

GP. If he is struggling to move his arm then it needs looking at.

Could be rotator cuff injury, I've done it a few times when least expected it

Bursitis?

He needs checking out. I hope they find out what’s causing all the pain and get him some painkillers that he’s able to take. Sounds so painful.

Shoxfordian · 01/06/2021 07:40

He needs to go to the doctor or the hospital

Justdowhatyouweretold · 01/06/2021 07:42

It could be a trapped nerve. My DH had the same. Get a GP appt. I hope it is better soon., sounds miserable!

ReginaaPhalange · 01/06/2021 07:49

Thanks all. Will phone the gp when they open at 8

I had frozen shoulder about 5 years ago. It's very painful and came out of nowhere. No accidents. It took 2 years to resolve itself and go through the three stages.

I agree he needs to see a doctor.

Update. Gp thinks soft tissue damage. Advised painkillers and heat pack

Glad he’s been checked out. If it doesn’t start to improve after a few weeks of resting it as much as he can I would recommend asking for an ultrasound to see what’s going on. Also if pain inceases or he has any numbness or tingling down his arm and/or his hand then he needs to be seen straight away. If a nerve is being compressed it needs sorting asap.
