How to make unusual size stone steps safer - any ideas?

We have a raised patio in our garden. I use large pots to keep my DS from running off the edges but we also have two sets of stone steps made from patio tiles. They are standard patio tile widths but varying depths and although they are not steep, the rate at which DS (just turned 4) tears around the garden means there are inevitable trips and falls.

I’m looking for something to put on the steps to make them safer but all the mats I can find are either very narrow, like the width of an indoor stair tread, or very wide. The steps are 120cm (I.e. two patio slabs) across and vary in depth between 42 and 38cm.

It’s not our house so we can’t do big renovations or stick anything to the steps.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

Would rubber door mats work?

That’s a good thought. I had a quick look and couldn’t see a kind of doormat that would work but I’ll have another look. Thanks.

Would you be better off to essentially block access to them except in one narrow place? Use pots again. It will force him to slow down at the point of the steps.
