You know when people refer to their pets as 'furbabies'

If someone has one of those naked cats/dogs/rats/guinea pigs, do they call it a 'skinbaby'? 🤔

I’m curious as to how you got thinking about something so bizarre on a Sunday morning? Grin

ButterflyBitch · 30/05/2021 09:40

Do you get furless rats and guinea pigs? 🤔

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 30/05/2021 09:42

@ButterflyBitch I saw a photo of a naked cat on Facebook and I wondered 🤣

Yes indeed, you get naked rats and guinea pigs (sphynx rats and skinny pigs)

Damn. I really hoped this was going to be a thread where I could vent about people calling their pets furbabies!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 30/05/2021 09:42

And birds feather babies?

I had a furless guinea pig!! He was rescued I an awful state, he looked like a naked mole rat. I called him my skinnypig, but I’ve never used the term fur babies for any of my creatures. Sadly he only lived another six months. I loved that skinnypig.

I have lots o bald animals. Two dogs and a whole bunch of Guineas. I don't call any fur babies or skin babies. That's just weird 😂

Pics attached. Skinny pig. Rescue pug x Chinese crested and a hairy hairless Chinese crested. The pug is bat shit crazy and will never be house trained, had zero manners, is traumatised but she's a totall loyal sweet heart that will literally do anything for a flat blanket and a stroke.

I have a snake, so he's definitely not a fur baby, so I call him 'my coily friend' instead.

Can I take this opportunity to ask what the actual fuck this new thing for puppies being carried around in slings is..?

It seems to have appeared with the lockdown puppy craze

And it’s always women of a certain age - just have a bloody baby! Don’t scratch the itch by carrying a sodding puppy around in a fake ergobaby ffs

Hellocatshome · 30/05/2021 10:08

I have 3 cats, a dog and 2 ducks none are furbabies or featherbabies they are freeloaders and the dogs an asylum seeker as well!

I did not know that! You learn something new every day.

If they're puppies it's probably so they can get out in public for socialisation prior to completing their full course of vaccinations. Or also if they're on a longer walk - puppies should have limited exercise due to their developing joints, so if you want to do a longer walk they can be carried for periods so that they aren't overdoing it. We had a new puppy last year and I carried her around in an old backpack worn on my front before her vaccinations and then periodically on longer walks with our other dogs whilst she was still small. A sling or backpack is easier and more comfortable than trying to carry them in your arms - our girl was nearly 10kg at 10 weeks old and kept getting more and more hefty very quickly.

@VetOnCall

I’ve had 2 Labrador puppies over the last few years and none of them had to be carted around in a baby bjorn!

It also doesn’t explain why they are exclusively used by a particular type of woman with particular breeds of dogs...

My nak'd is what I call my Spynx boy, although officially they have fuzz. Like holding a hot peach!

I confess to calling my doggo our "fur baby" on occasion. I think because me and my partner don't have any kids together (from previous relationships) it sometimes feels like she is ours.

In my defense though I made him promise never to tell anyone I call her that sometimes. Blush

amusedtodeath1 · 30/05/2021 10:41

(we both have kids - from other relationships). That should have said.

That was your choice but many people do want to socialise young puppies and carrying them means that it can be done safely before they're fully vaccinated or to avoid over exercising them. My new dog is also a large, active gundog breed and it's easy to over exercise them as puppies - maybe I should've splashed out on a BB and saved myself some shoulder strain Grin It's not always just done for show - although undoubtedly sometimes that is the case. Regardless of where I've worked there are always some clients who go in for the 'fashion accessory' thing with dogs - here in Canada the latest fad seems to be dyeing their fur different colours, so lots of Huskies with hot pink tails etc. - although I don't particularly like it, having done the job this long I can tolerate most things as long as the animal is cared for/about!

I mean it wouldn't take you two seconds to think quickly about why it might not be possible for someone to "just have a baby" and therefore get a dog instead but that seems like too much trouble obviously.

Mankyfruitbowl · 30/05/2021 11:59

Maybe we could start referring to our human children as skinpets?

SappysCurry · 30/05/2021 12:05

Is ‘furry friend’ / ‘feathered friend’ okay ?
