Ancestry DNA or similar

Has anyone used Ancestry DNA or similar to find out their background (re heritage etc)?

I'm trying to organise DH's birthday present and I was considering ordering a kit like this so he can look into his heritage a bit more

I’ve just done this with my partner. He’s came back today but mine isn’t back yet.

It’s given his heritage fairly accurately and managed to identify his cousin who has also done it. He also got a huge list of 4th cousins.

He’s very into tracing his family tree so it was interesting for him. He already had a good idea of his family heritage and the results agreed with it.

Me and my wife did! She was thoroughly impressed with hers as she has turned out to be 69% scottish mostly orkney which matches to the work I've done her tree. Mine surprisingly gave me irish which I'm starting to discover on my tree. I do recommend it but it really does depend which bits of DNA have passed down, so not 100% accurate.

I got my test back in February.
No surprises for me, but I’ve been researching for about 14 years now and hit brick walls so this helps flesh it out a little.

I did it a few weeks ago and found it so fascinating I persuaded DH to do it too, and he was very pleased with his results. We were both contacted by second cousins, and that led to some intriguing bits of family history surfacing.

I love to do it but would be very nervous about some kind of skeleton emerging from the closet.

I gave DH this for his birthday. He is the result of a holiday romance between his DM and DF, and he had minimal information.
It turns out that he has half siblings and loads of cousins. And he has been able to make a paternal family tree.
Before he sent it off, we joked about me getting him brothers and sisters for his birthday! He may not make any contact with any of them, but it it has filled in a lot of gaps for him.

I’d proceed with caution. I currently have discovered 6 half siblings and between our families (4 different ones involved) there are obviously some secrets. All of us did it to see about our heritage and now it’s a mess

But if you choose, you can opt out of being linked to, or contacted by other family members.

It's a good gift but be very aware that there's a possibility of skeletons coming out the closet - I know a few people who found they had half siblings through Ancestry DNA 😬 or that they weren't fully related to their siblings like they thought they were
