Does anyone know about heraldry or emblems? Symbols?

Trying to identify a badge. It’s a lapel badge, but I’m struggling to even describe it for google to get anything similar.
I’d be interested if anyone could help, or even if you know the badge!
I’ll try to attach a photo.

No clue, OP. I am just bumping the thread for you. After having a google myself about heraldry and coat of arms there seem to be people making a living out of identifying those things so I expect not as simple as just having a google to find out what that is.

Maybe try the AIBU board. You might get more traffic.

This looks like one of Columbus' ships, the Nina, Pinta or Santa Maria.

Hullo! Just putting the baby to bed so will look properly in a sec. I haven't seen it before, but that's a cross potent. It looks quite modern- though that was an anti-nazi symbol last century.

The cross looks like a Red Cross of Constantine, which is apparently connected to the Masons. Maybe the owner was in a masonic lodge in the navy.

I know nothing about this, just googled while having a coffee Smile

Back temporarily....

The fact that it's red probably suggests St George's cross too- maybe a Roman Catholic organisation based in the UK?

hilarymantlepiece · 29/05/2021 19:36

Don’t know but immediately suggests the Crusades/Knights Templar to me.

It may be a guide county badge, or maybe scouts (don't know if they have enamel versions or not)

Coldhandscoldheart · 29/05/2021 23:05

Some great thoughts thanks.
Interesting idea about the masons. We have no idea at all who/where it might have come from, but there are a few family connections to masonry.
I’ve never seen an enamel county badge for scouts or guides, but worth a look.

Does anyone know what you call the wiggly white line? There’s a second cross underneath.

I did a bit of Googling, the shape of the cross looks like a Portuguese cross, or Cross of the Order of Christ - various images here - and there are images here that I got from searching with a description of the ship and sail.
More about the Portuguese Cross
Hope this might be interesting, if not helpful! It's a lovely badge, please do update if you find out what it is.
