Weymouth Area Housing Market

I'm confused by what I've been reading today about how property prices are shooting up in seaside areas and the house/flat hunting we've been doing online in the Weymouth area.

We are looking to buy in the area but need to wait until probate on my MIL estate is completed and her flat is sold, so it's not imminent. We've therefore been keeping an eye on the market to get a feel for what is available. We actually love Swanage, but it's likely to be out of our price range, whereas Weymouth prices look much more affordable.

However, there are several properties that we've been benchmarking that not only haven't sold but have been reduced, which seems at direct odds to today's reports that seaside areas are seeing an unprecedented boom in prices. So what am I missing? Is Weymouth not a good place to live? As I said, I know Swanage much better, but everyone I know that has been to Weymouth on holiday loves it, but obviously holidaying somewhere is far different to living there.

So does anyone who lives in the area have any pointers please? I'd also be interested in any suggestions for other towns or villages in Dorset within easy reach of the sea where we could start looking. We won't have megabucks to spend though, so needs to be an affordable place

I’m close to Weymouth (I actually live in Swanage!) and Weymouth has always had quite a big drug problem which probably helps keep the house prices down. Have you thought of Dorchester? Not far from Weymouth, it’s a really lovely town and property prices are pretty reasonable.

You lucky thing - I'd love to live in Swanage. We did think of Dorchester but it's further away from the sea than we really want to be. Thank you for the heads up ref the drugs thing. That's very useful information.

No problem, I hope you manage to find something.

I live in Weymouth. We bought a new build in November and I really like it here. There are certainly less nice parts but I always feel safe. Two of my sister in laws have sold their houses in the first week of going to market very recently. Do you want to link the properties you’ve seen and I can see if I can shed any light?
