Are tanzanite rings a bad idea?

I want to get a ring reset and include a tanzanite as the centre stone.
Just been to the jewellers and he very politely warned me of the fragility of tanzanites and how they’re fine for earrings and necklaces but rings not so much.

I’m sad. I really love the stone but if it’s going to crack or chip then I’ll have to have a rethink.

Anyone got experience good or bad of a tanzanite ring?

Yeah, wouldn’t recommend. Mine chipped within a week. So fragile. I had the stone set into a pendant instead. I’ve worn Opal rings for longer with no issues.

Within a week!? Blimey.😱

I had a tanzanite engagement ring and wore it for almost a year every day and still wear it on special occasions. I worked with small children and have pets and there wasn’t any visible damage.

I wasn’t aware that it was considered fragile so perhaps I was just lucky.

I bought DW a tanzanite and diamond engagement ring about 20 years ago. One chip (repaired on house insurance) after a very nasty bike accident right on it. No other wear in all that time.

We def would not recommend tanzanite for an every day ring. Better suited to earrings or necklaces.
It's up to you, the jeweller will warn you as they won't want to be blamed if it doesn't last for you.

I've got a tanzanite engagement ring. I don't wear it for gardening or activities where it might get knocked. I've had it over twenty years with no problems but maybe I've just been lucky.

BIWI · 29/05/2021 18:48

I've got a tanzanite engagement ring. Have had it since 1989, so over 30 years, and I wear it every day. The only time I take it off is when I go to bed. It has never become damaged.

I have had a Tanzanite engagement ring for 7 years and like you I fell in love with the stone. It is softer than other precious stones for sure. Mine does have some faint scratches on it now, although I still love it. I am going to see about getting it buffed and polished soon, to see if that will get rid of the scratch marks. No one else would notice this, just me. I would also consider replacing the stone in time if it gets any deep scratches. But even then I think I'd pick Tanzanite again! It's beautiful!

My (cheapish) tanzanite ring is now quite scuffed and scratched - but I don't look after it so not surprised

Shoxfordian · 29/05/2021 19:01

I’ve had a tanzanite for 17 years and it’s fine, I don’t wear it all the time though

zaffa · 29/05/2021 19:08

I have a beautiful tanzanite engagement ring - I am careful with it a d take it off at night and when washing hands / cleaning etc (and since I've had DD actually don't wear either ring in case I scratch her) but there's no damage at all

roguetomato · 29/05/2021 19:14

I have mine over 20 years, it's totally fine. But since the design is solitaire ring with the stone sticking out, I only wear it when I go out, not in the house doing house works.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/05/2021 19:58

I have a tanzanite engagement ring which is 12 years old. I used to wear it every day when I did an office job, but now I am more likely to be gardening, it's special occasions only.

It is absolutely fine.

Tanzanite is 6.5 on the Moh scale.

Blackopal · 29/05/2021 20:18

Hardness is one aspect of a stone's strength, tanzanite is brittle and can become damaged in normal wear.
Great to hear of all these tanzanites lasting well, the supply is expected to run out in a few decades so you have something special there.

Sosigsandwich · 29/05/2021 21:50

I've had mine 7 years and it's still perfect. It's a halo ring with 2 rings of diamonds and a diamond band and I've had more issues with the diamonds.

Dunlin · 30/05/2021 10:14

Thank you for all your stories of long lasting tanzanite rings. I want to go for it but dh (who is buying it for me as an anniversary gift) wants to go for a sapphire as they are harder wearing.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/05/2021 17:55

You're the one who will be wearing it...why doesn't your DH go with your opinion?
(Or when he wants fish and chips, give him salad as it is "better for him"!)

sorryiasked · 30/05/2021 18:02

I've worn mine every day for 28 yrs, the top has rounded off so it's no longer got any cut lines to it, but never chipped.

I have a tanzanite engagement ring. I don't wear it all the time due to my job and then forget to put it on. But I've had no problems in the year or so of having it. And it really is the loveliest ring. I'll definitely be more careful with it after reading this thread though.

Boopeedoop · 30/05/2021 22:10

My sis in law has a purple sapphire. Much stronger than a tanzanite.

ericbaker · 13/06/2022 10:41

Let me tell you, the tanzanite gemstone is one of the trendy stones for wedding rings nowadays. So that tanzanite ring is not a bad idea. Recently I also bought a tanzanite ring for my sister and she is very happy to get it.

Ukholidaylover · 13/06/2022 14:06

My engagement ring is 5 years old, worn constantly and I've had no issues at all with the Tanzanite. I get lots of complements about it.
