Does anyone take sage supplement for menopause?

I've been taking sage since last August - I take it with red clover and DiM and that combination has been controlling my menopause symptoms relatively well.
I ran out of sage last weekend and never got round to ordering it. From Tuesday, I have felt absolutely shocking - no energy, dizzy, nauseous, internal heat waves (not sweats per se) and no motivation/low mood.
Could this be from not having sage? Ir could it be a sage withdrawal?
I've been googling and apparently sage isn't recommended to be taken at high dose for more than 4 months as it contains a neurotoxin which can cause seizures.
I want to go back on it but now am hesitant as I've been in on it for 10 months already.
If you take it, how long have you taken it for? I had thought that it was a supplement that could be taken for years.

What’s defined as a high dose? Check that, then find a supplement that is lower.

Most supplements and vitamins sold in the U.K. are pretty low-strength because we’re still using the EU regulations.

High strength quoted as over 300mg extract of sage daily. My supplement is 250mg.

It's the thujone neurotoxin I'm concerned about.

Id suggest asking your doctor about HRT

Thanks but so many of my friends have tried HRT and had side effects/felt worse not been able to find the right regime for them. It just seems like another minefield that I haven’t got the energy to circumnavigate!
The sage/Red clover/DIM combo was working well.
I just hadn’t been aware of this potential neurotoxin risk with sage.
Has anyone been on sage for a number of years?

@Branleuse - HRT isn't the answer for everyone. Sage & the Mirena coil saved me.

@luckylavender. So have you been taking sage for a while?

A friend of mine is a toxicologist, and he said that while herbal remedies can be ok in their own right, it is not always advisable to take more than one at a time. Even though they are 'natural' remedies, they contain chemicals just like man-made drugs, and combining them can cause adverse side-effects.

I've been taking sage supplements for about 6 months and like you, I felt a considerable difference when I once ran out and did without them for a few days.

You probably need to look into it more carefully.

luckylavender · 29/05/2021 14:22

@JMAngel1 - yes I did take it for a while. Maybe 3 years. I'm through the menopause now.

JMAngel1 · 29/05/2021 15:41

Thanks both. I think for now I need to restart them (can't go on feeling like this!) and then maybe see a herbalist to check everything is safe together.

have you tried agnus castus. I found that quite helpful, and i agree that HRT isnt without issues, but because of its protective nature against all sorts of age related stuff, i thought it was worth mentioning if you hadnt tried it
