Please help me with my menopausal bloat!!

Since hitting menopause (hard!) I get such a bloated tummy most days.
I'm really slim so it's noticeable and gets progressively worse throughout the day.
It's really getting me down as some days my clothes feel uncomfortable and as it's much worse in the evening, I feel really self conscious on nights out Sad
Someone mentioned that a quality, daily probiotic might help but as there is so much choice, I could really do with a recommendation?

Have you seen your GP? You should get yourself checked first to rule out a few things.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 28/05/2021 22:15

I know I should and I will but somedays my stomach is flat so I'm fairly sure it's nothing sinister.
I can have a sluggish digestive system (I'm coeliac and have had ibs in the past) but it's getting worse, which I've been told is thanks to the menopause.

Please go and see your GP and get checked out especially if bloating is a new symptom for you. I don't want to scare you but I have recently been diagnosed with Ovarian cancer which presented as ibs type symptoms and bloating that got progressively worse (I am in my 40s).

The estrogen and progesterone changes around menopause are buggers for causing this kind of thing. A probiotic would be great but start with a 1bn one, and work slowly up to stronger ones else you'll make your symptoms worse in the short run. Get tested or do some food exclusions if you suspect food intolerances - I did that and it changed my life (I've got a wheat allergy, was always looking 6 months pregnant, now I have great digestion!).

Around menopause it's always great to also invest in a good multimineral, multivitamin & omega supplement.

@twointhemorning yes that was what I was concerned the OP should have ruled out.
My mum had it 3 years ago (is doing really well now after huge operation.)
Wish you well Flowers

I got these symptoms and was worried about possible ovarian issues. GP was great reassuring me and running a whole load of blood tests which were fine. She suggested a probiotic which seems to have reset things now.

So sorry to read this, I hope you're doing ok? Thanks I'm hoping to get in at the Drs soon and will definitely get anything sinister ruled out. Thank you to those stressing the importance of it!

Do you have any recommendations for a decent probiotic? I take menopace religiously and a calcium supplement too.

@TheDogsMother which one do you take? I've looked and there are so many!!

You are right there are zillions. In the end I just read some reviews (if they are to be believed) and chose these. They do seem to have improved things

Thank you, that's really helpful. I actually looked at those just before writing my post!

There really are a lot! I personally found Boots Travel digestion support/probiotic of all things the best. I could tolerate a higher dose with that. In the short term bloating etc can get worse, but it's worth sticking with for real long term improvement. Menopace IMO is great but the magnesium is way too low so I'd supplement with a magnesium taken alongside your calcium before bed every night.
