I'm all for sustainability but... *shudder*

Wooden cutlery. Just touching it makes my skin crawl. As for that horrible dry, draggy, graty feeling in your mouth when you try to eat with them; ugh, makes me want to vomit.

I'm 100% against single use plastic but I got my lunch today (salad takeaway) to eat in the park and I got given a wooden fork. It was discarded after one mouthful and I had to eat a bloody tossed salad with my fingers. At one point I just put my face in the box.

I know the answer is my own cutlery but omg how can ANYONE eat off those horrible things. I can't be alone can I? Surely there's a market for nice shiny cutlery made of something biodegradable. Maybe a boiled sweet shaped like a fork?

I also remembered I used to hate finishing ice lollies because of the need to lick the horrible stick or those nasty little wood forks from the chippy.

I'm shuddering just at the thought of it.

The wooden ones seem more wasteful too. The plastic ones can be re-washed and last for ages.

AdaColeman · 27/05/2021 12:55

Bone or horn spoons maybe?

onemouseplace · 27/05/2021 13:01

I'm totally with you - especially when you got to the bit about the ice lolly sticks as well.

Those wooden forks are also completely not fit for purpose as the amount of times I broken a prong because you have to push them really quite hard against the bottom of the container to actually spear any food with them.

@AdaColeman

Bone or horn spoons maybe?
If I was going to the trouble of a horn spoon I'd probably settle for some stainless steel tbh!

HumunaHey · 27/05/2021 13:04

Yeah I really don't like them and I get paranoid about splinters.

RaspberryThief · 27/05/2021 13:04

I wonder whether it would work to offer a discount if you bring your own reusable cutlery? Like so many cafes do with reusable cups, or indeed with plastic bag charges.

NeedNewKnees · 27/05/2021 13:10

They are horrible, they make everything taste wrong.

emmathedilemma · 27/05/2021 13:13

I agree, they're grim!

Sleepingdogs12 · 27/05/2021 13:13

I completely agree but the solution is to buy a cheap fork and keep it in your bag.

HappyWipings · 27/05/2021 13:14

I hate them too. I carry a stainless steel set so that I don't have to use them.

PattyPan · 27/05/2021 13:15

I have a set of plastic cutlery in a little box I keep in my work bag for this reason and because I was sick of trying to eat a salad with a spoon and knife when they ran out of forks

I think Bamboo is better than some of the other types of wood they se to use and grows fast so is a much better option than others types.

GlumyGloomer · 27/05/2021 13:20

I agree that wooden forks are grim, and I long ago perfected the art of scraping the last bit of lolly off with my teeth to avoid my tongue touching the stick, but oddly I have no problem with bamboo chopsticks. Maybe a bamboo fork is the answer, or maybe we should just move over to chopsticks?

Travel Cutlery Set
I've got this that I use for lunches out.

AlmostSummer21 · 27/05/2021 13:22

I don't like them, but it's perfectly possible to eat a salad with them without 'scraping your teeth' on them.

You can get folding forks if you're not using a bag just now.

Thecatsawinner · 27/05/2021 13:26

Just take a fork and Spoon? I used to take cutlery in my handbag as I work out and about and didn’t want to live off rubbish sandwiches. Napkin wipe down then stick it in dishwasher at home

idontlikealdi · 27/05/2021 13:28

Awful I agree, I wonder about the packaging and transport on bamboo cutlery as well. They're certainly not growing it here in SE England.

AlanThePig · 27/05/2021 13:35

Oh God I agree! I have issues with certain things touching my mouth, wood being the main one but paper straws as well because they are a similar texture. I bought one of these from Aliexpress and replaced the chopsticks with a silicone straw so I've got it all covered:

Beamur · 27/05/2021 13:38

Yup. Carry a spork? Wash it when you get home.

BiddyPop · 27/05/2021 13:42

Buy a spork in a case, carry that in your handbag, and wash it daily after using it for takeaway lunch salads. Then you don't need the disposable cutlery.

BikeRunSki · 27/05/2021 14:02

I don’t mind wooden cutlery, but i hate wooden toothbrushes

Cocolapew · 27/05/2021 14:05

At one point I just put my face in the box
😂

queenatom · 27/05/2021 14:06

Yes - horrible, horrible, horrible! I have a portable metal set with a little case which I take with me if I think I might need them; otherwise I try to avoid eating anything which needs cutlery.
