Wooden cutlery. Just touching it makes my skin crawl. As for that horrible dry, draggy, graty feeling in your mouth when you try to eat with them; ugh, makes me want to vomit.

I'm 100% against single use plastic but I got my lunch today (salad takeaway) to eat in the park and I got given a wooden fork. It was discarded after one mouthful and I had to eat a bloody tossed salad with my fingers. At one point I just put my face in the box.

I know the answer is my own cutlery but omg how can ANYONE eat off those horrible things. I can't be alone can I? Surely there's a market for nice shiny cutlery made of something biodegradable. Maybe a boiled sweet shaped like a fork?

I also remembered I used to hate finishing ice lollies because of the need to lick the horrible stick or those nasty little wood forks from the chippy.

I'm shuddering just at the thought of it.

You can get travel cutlery sets like the ones linked above from the pound shop, mine has lasted years now!

Freecuthbert · 27/05/2021 16:17

I can't have ice lollies on the wooden sticks or those forks from the chippy. I just taste a mouthful of wood. I know you can have the ice lolly and just leave the final remnants, but the idea of the wooden stick just makes me shudder!

I laughed out loud at this OP absolutely hilarious!!!!!!!

I hate wooden cutlery and paper straws 🤢

I can’t bear the feel of soggy wood anyway though, I can’t touch wooden spoons when doing the washing up 🤮

SimonJT · 27/05/2021 16:32

I don’t like wooden cutlery either, unless its proper wooden chopsticks that have been treated.

I generally eat with my hands so portable cutlery is rarely an issue, however the joseph joseph set is quite good, I bought a set for our camper.

jay55 · 27/05/2021 16:39

The only wooden cutlery that is acceptable is a chippy fork.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 27/05/2021 16:46

I thought this was going to be about family cloth.

MintyMabel · 27/05/2021 17:04

Ditto paper straws.

RandomMess · 27/05/2021 17:14

I have found my people!!!

I would probably resort to carrying my own nice stuff around in a dedicated pencil case and just have to remember to wash and replace when back home!

Can't eat ice lollies as too much of a risk that there's a wooden stick and I don't like basic wafer cone for ice cream either 😂

I have a titanium spork from a proper bonkers Norwegian outdoorsy store (ie they sell several different types of lightweight travel axe).

I kind of feel I might dive into a fjord or something once I’ve finished my Pret salad (and let it digest, obvs - I’m not completely reckless).

I just chuck it in my handbag and wash it now and then. I think that’s what the Ancient Norsemen used to do.

danni0509 · 27/05/2021 22:05

Cardboard straws are the worst.

Malin52 · 28/05/2021 05:09

I've just remembered I've got a spork (tm) in the camping box! Nice and light. Will now come with me everywhere.

When I bought it I remember me and DH having a discussion that a spork isn't really that useful as a spoon and fork kinda does the same thing and what would be really useful is a Knifoon TM (knife and spoon) or a Knork TM (knife and fork).

Oh gosh yes, I tried to eat yoghurt with one of these and I can still remember the taste, bluergh. I carry a spoon usually but if I forgot I'd just eat the food with my hands or lick it out of the container if needed rather than take the wooden spoon.

custardbear · 28/05/2021 05:26

I have the perfect solution ... no effort needed to feed yourself, biodegradable, reusable, if trained well can be used for other things, self washing, can take itself back to the shop of origin when finished for the next use 😋

GertietheGherkin · 28/05/2021 05:32

Stainless steel straws are fantastic, and they come with their own cleaning brush. I got some from IKEA 😁

My Spork has a (not very sharp) blade along one of the outer prongs. You can’t eat soup with a fork or stab chips etc with a spoon.

I read a horrifying story about someone who died when a stainless steel straw went through the roof of their mouth Shock

I'll stick with soft silicone! To be fair, I hate the feeling of metal straws and I can't drink out of metal cups/flasks either, so the aforementioned story just stiffened my resolve...

drumandthebass · 28/05/2021 13:24

I feel the same. Don't get me started on paper straws 😩

JustJoinedRightNow · 28/05/2021 13:25

Yes OP! They are disgusting!

Mylittlesandwich · 28/05/2021 13:27

Yup, both paper straws and wooden cutlery give me the heebie jeebies. I have a stainless steel straw (with silicone ends so I don't get impaled) I think I might need to get travel cutlery too.
