If you asked for a salary of £75k and you were told that it “won’t be exactly what was proposed but it wouldn’t be a million miles away”, how much would you expect to be offered?

I’d want it starting with a 7

Don’t forget to get your draft contract with the offer so you can review and negotiate on that as well.

If they come back with a lower salary, push on other things eg extra holiday, sign on bonus, increased bonus potential etc

@SpindleWhorl

70k, and I'd settle on 75k like a man would.
Ha! This!

'Not a million miles' would be no less than 72K (and good benefits and/or discretionary bonus) in my book.

But it also depends on the salary band (if there is one stated) or what the top advertised salary was. If it was say £70-80 then offering below £75K is them trying to get you in at the bottom end of the band and unless your experience etc justifies you being at the lower end then its a try on and you should counter offer back.

If £75K is a reasonable salary based on your c.v. /background then stick to your guns. Just be aware many companies have quite rigid salary bands and they might offer a weirdly specific number like £74,843!

You should also ask what the Pay structure is within the grade or salary band you are in, the progression steps above you are and what the process is for salaries reviews e.g via good performance. And if a bonus, how the criteria is agreed and how often it is paid out (I worked somewhere with an alleged 'up to 20% bonus'. Criteria were mainly based on profit levels and almost impossible to meet and it got paid out at a much much lower level twice in 6 years)

Good luck!
