How? Where to look? I’ve been unemployed for nearly 11 years.
No one wants to know so far. So i think it’s time to accept that I can’t have a career, I can’t go back to what I was and the ship has sailed. Retail is now a dead duck. So what can I do?! Oh and I still have a school run to do ... Please ideas or better still a job

Care work.

CompleteBarstool · 26/05/2021 17:05

Around here the jobs pages are full of care jobs.

Is that something you'd be interested in as I'm presuming it could involve shifts that fit in with the school run?

TheQueef · 26/05/2021 17:07

Can you drive?
Amazon flex.

ChessIsASport · 26/05/2021 17:07

What skills do you have?
Could you run a group like Jo Jingles, Monkey Music, Creation Station etc?
Can you drive?

CompleteBarstool · 26/05/2021 17:08

I meant to say that the care jobs vary from working with the elderly (either in care homes or their own homes), with adults with learning disabilities and also with children (with either disabilities or behavioural problems) so quite varied.

Can you afford to volunteer anywhere ?

I had 8 years out of the workplace as a SAHP and couldn’t return to my old career, I did some volunteering in a school, which lead to a small part time role which in turn lead to a part time role in the NHS, for anyone looking to re enter the workplace I would always suggest to do some volunteering (if finances allow) because it’s a great way to dip your toe in, develop your skills and make contacts.

Cowbells · 26/05/2021 17:09

There is a massive shortage of care workers at the moment.

RubyFowler · 26/05/2021 17:09

Delivery driver

CiderJolly · 26/05/2021 17:10

Civil service

Slub · 26/05/2021 17:18

It's not that easy getting into the civil service!

HarrisMcCoo · 26/05/2021 17:21

Care work.

I did something similar, starting as a volunteer in an office. Now permanent staff member - it took a while though!
Whysotired · 26/05/2021 17:23

Try hotels, loads taking on at the moment as a lot have lost a lot of staff. X

AlCalavicci · 26/05/2021 17:25

Where do you live ( very roughly ) how far are you willing to commute?

BlackPetunia · 26/05/2021 17:27

how is retail a 'dead duck'?

what do you mean there?

UhtredRagnarson · 26/05/2021 17:31

Cleaner. Self employed. Set your own hours. Most clients want you during school hours.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 26/05/2021 17:34

Care work is sadly the most likely to be easy to get, and fast.

Or sales jobs, but you’d want to be good at talking on the phone/have a thick skin, or you probably wouldn’t hit targets so wouldn’t last long, but you’d be being paid in the short term if you’re in dire straits...

Bovrilly · 26/05/2021 17:37

If you can type, transcription work is good for arranging around other things.

MrsPear · 26/05/2021 17:37

If you check the newspapers or just walk around your local shopping centre you will see what I mean by retail being a dead duck.

Care work - that’s an idea.

I’m in London / Kent btw

Health Secretary?

Twistered · 26/05/2021 17:39

Definitely look into care work as there is a shortage of carers at the moment

Morfin · 26/05/2021 17:41

Seriously though, care work or cleaning, neither fun but shortages mean you can choose your hours. Also café work near me, there are lots of lunchtime shifts but you might have a problem in school holidays.

BlackPetunia · 26/05/2021 17:42

er...i'm in retail, non food...

we are hiring
we are doubling targets
share prices are decent
overtime is available
run off our feet

nowhere near a 'shopping centre'....dead duck you say??

motogogo · 26/05/2021 17:43

Hospitality is hiring where we are, the local pub needs 4, tapas 2, tea rooms 3, Italian 2, Wetherspoons 4... that's just one town. Offer to do a trial for free to get a chance
