How? Where to look? I’ve been unemployed for nearly 11 years.
No one wants to know so far. So i think it’s time to accept that I can’t have a career, I can’t go back to what I was and the ship has sailed. Retail is now a dead duck. So what can I do?! Oh and I still have a school run to do ... Please ideas or better still a job

Do you have admin skills? You could see whether universities near you have a temp bank/ typing pool type thing. You sign up and they might contact you for casual work. It might start with something like photocopying but can lead to better admin positions.

a country pub i used to work at currenty has a vacancy for kitchen staff - but its only two days a week and is from 1pm to 11pm and no bus/train close by,but the main problem is the school run - this rules out alot of jobs .They have emailed me saying they no one has applied for the job in 5 weeks .They also need foh staff so one could do both on different days ?

Thighdentitycrisis · 26/05/2021 17:50

Article on the news tonight about lack of staff in hotels/hospitality for the coming season, it’s seasonal but might be a foot on the door?

MrsPear · 26/05/2021 17:51

The other issue with retail is my availability or rather inflexibility. For example local pub needs staff and I’ve done that (ok it was 20 years ago) but who is going to care for the children at 11pm ? !

I still need work in child care available hours - which where I am is Monday to Friday 7 30 to 6 30pm. The cost is £10 p/h per child.

I’ve found a local care home and they even said they don’t mind applications for useless lumps or rather returnees to work. So here goes. Anyway my starting wage in 98 was 4.29 at least the minimum wage is more than that!

@BlackPetunia You must be working for one of the very rare exceptions. My town centre has lost almost all of it's shops. The likes of B&M are doing ok on the outskirts but the town centre is depressing. New Look, Primark and Next are the only clothes shops left and Primark is the only one I don't expect to close soon.

Flowerclock · 26/05/2021 17:56

Most retailers are actually hiring.

Because all of the staff who were laid off/paid naff all furlough have left after being shafted.

PennyRoyal · 26/05/2021 17:57

Same around here. Town centre is a home for pigeons and empty shops. No independents opening up and major retailers closing fast. Its sad to see.

pabloescobarselasticband · 26/05/2021 18:08

When I wanted to get back to work i went to work for the local school kitchen catering company. I started off as a general assistant and ended up a cook. Its only during school hours and term time. Not fantastic money but the government top it up with universal credit.

Having owned a care agency in the past, my experience was that many apply and start care jobs but don't go the distance. If you can be relied upon and show initiative you can get on quite fast. There's lots of training you can take advantage of.

Fitforforty · 26/05/2021 18:22

There are lots of things in the news about hospitality industry struggling to recruit.

Gingernaut · 26/05/2021 18:25

Sign up to temp agencies.

GellerYeller · 26/05/2021 18:26

I'm in a HR related field. It's difficult to get people to move jobs at present due to fear of in eligibility for furlough if lockdown happens, people still working at home etc. So for a returner to work who is immediately available this puts you in line for consideration where previously you may not have been.
Having a long time out can mean some employers assume you're not wanting to work and need to be seen job seeking for benefits to continue so address any gaps in your employment history on your CV. Put all the relevant info at the top of your CV, in bullet points as people don't always read them through fully, and get a good cover letter stating what you will do, how flexible you are and the hours and salary you're open to. Hit the job sites (Reed, indeed, CV Library) and agencies are crying out for production and distribution staff which can be a way to earn and get a foot in the door of companies who may not have looked at your CV otherwise. Good luck.

amatsip · 26/05/2021 18:29

If you are okay with doing customer service, enterprise rent a car often have home working opportunities. Loads of diff shifts and a living wage. Really a nice company to work for.

MrsPear · 26/05/2021 18:40

Thanks for all the messages. I’ll keep plugging and thanks for the tips GellerYeller it’s nice to hear from someone in hr that doesn’t just right me off. I want to work - ds now has support and in a proper unit - physical disability- and hopefully someone can see that.

I do a very poorly paid side gig as a freelance proofreader - but it's flexible. Is something like that your cup of tea?

ghislaine · 26/05/2021 18:52

McDonald's?

You can search "[location] unskilled jobs" and lots of vacancies come up. I found these:

conducting surveys

leaflet distributor

Novotel housekeeping team

Dinner lady - not in your area, but there must be options near you

Cinema host
