How? Where to look? I’ve been unemployed for nearly 11 years.
No one wants to know so far. So i think it’s time to accept that I can’t have a career, I can’t go back to what I was and the ship has sailed. Retail is now a dead duck. So what can I do?! Oh and I still have a school run to do ... Please ideas or better still a job

@Morfin

Health Secretary?
Grin Brilliant.
Azerothi · 27/05/2021 11:12

This isn't going to be something many will want to do but I work for a company that finds hook-ups for married men. There are lots of jobs like that in the 'sex' industry from home. No webcams or video involved.

mermaidsariel · 27/05/2021 11:14

@Bovrilly

If you can type, transcription work is good for arranging around other things.
How would you go about finding transcription work?
MrsPear · 27/05/2021 11:16

Right I’ve heard back from the local care home and that was a no. I’ve emailed back and asked why. I’m going to try the others plus there is an agency local too.

I do a very poorly paid side gig as a freelance proofreader - but it's flexible. Is something like that your cup of tea?
I would love to do this. How to start though?
daisydalrymple · 27/05/2021 11:20

Also, I see plenty of teaching assistant jobs on our local council website. Some of these are supporting SEN pupils in mainstream schools. This might be something that would suit you?

daisydalrymple · 27/05/2021 11:21

Obviously TA jobs might not be a plenty in other LA areas.

MiaRoma · 27/05/2021 11:22

@Morfin

Health Secretary?
:D

Or PM? ;-)

PiccalilliChilli · 27/05/2021 11:31

Food retailers are thriving.
Internet shopping means more warehouse work.
Bar work

Blueeyedgirl21 · 27/05/2021 12:13

Supermarket work
local Co-Op - most round here are taking on
Ask on local Facebook pages who are hiring
Dinner lady or lunch time assistant roles

Can I ask whereabouts you live generally? Can you do weekends or evenings?

Blueeyedgirl21 · 27/05/2021 12:14

What was the care home role and how did you approach the application? Round here care jobs especially in-home care don’t even require a maths and English GCSE they are so desperate for people.

WineAcademy · 27/05/2021 12:19

@mermaidsariel

I actually applied for a different freelancing job with an organisation, and they told me they didn't have any more of that work available, asked if I wanted this one instead. It's peanuts at £2 per 1k words, but it's easy enough. I am still waiting for them to pay my most recent invoice, though. 😒 They are usually more prompt.

Bbq1 · 27/05/2021 12:19

How sad that care work is suggested as a low skill job available to anyone. Time they employed qualified staff and paid better rates. Sorry, hijacking the thread.

Bbq1 · 27/05/2021 12:23

@Sheerheight

Delivery driver (the local hermes driver seems to keep to school hours). TA LSA School admin
Ta?! That's not a job anyone can just get. When we advertise for ta"s we attract up to 100 applications from teachers and ta's. All very experienced and qualified. I've been a TA for 16 years and I have a degree and a Btec in Childhood Studies.

And how pray do they pay for that?
3cats2kids · 27/05/2021 12:53

If you are happy to do care or cleaning there are usually loads of jobs.

KimchiLaLa · 27/05/2021 12:53

Hospitality are in desperate need of workers

Blueeyedgirl21 · 27/05/2021 15:18

@Bbq1 that would be lovely wouldn’t it! Unfortunately most care agencies pay minimum wage for long hours with unpaid breaks, and many workers have to use their own cars to drive between clients, and don’t even get refunded for most of their fuel and insurance costs

Slub · 27/05/2021 15:29
@Slub

It’s not that hard to get into the civil service if you’re going for AO grades- and it’ll still be better paid than care and more flexible.

If you think you’d be good at telephony customer service, admin etc then you’d be fine.

I work in the Civil Service and know loads of people who got in with limited recent experience.
Well they must be dumbing down then cos when I worked in the Civil Service it certainly wasn't easy to get in even for an AA post!
I left 15 years ago though 🤷‍♂️

DogsSausages · 27/05/2021 15:36

Where do you live. I know SE/Kent well. Carehomes also need admin, reception, housekeeping staff. What about hotel work. The nhs or local private hospital will have jobs. Whats your local hospital.

This was my immediate thought as well. I've worked in care for years and absolutely love it, but it's hard work and long hours, so much responsibility including safeguarding and handling controlled drugs, you are also vulnerable to not just allegations but violence especially when lone working. Nowadays those with mild care needs are able to lead more independent lives than years ago and rightly so, the days of them being in care homes is a thing of the past. In my experience it is mostly working with really complex needs that requires or should require higher level training and qualifications. I have been badly sexually assaulted in my line of work and this was able to happen due to having to rely on unexperienced agency staff who don't follow policy and therefore leave staff and service users at risk. I don't think it should be some low skilled minimum wage job that anyone can walk into.
CiderJolly · 27/05/2021 18:39

@slub I would say it’s a thorough application process rather than difficult. But it’s all relative isn’t it? I don’t know what it was like 15 years ago but that’s not really relevant to the op anyway.

CV gaps aren’t a problem for AA/AO roles.

I’m with the DWP-

TheDogsMother · 27/05/2021 18:42

Someone I know recently left retail as she wanted weekends off. Set up as a cleaner and in very little time her diary is full and sets her own hours.

NancyDrawed · 27/05/2021 19:06

Some people make a good income from matched betting (it's not gambling - the outcome of whichever event makes no difference to profit/loss).
I don't make loads, because I don't put the hours in and am disorganised, but have averaged £350 / month since I started Jan 2018 (13500 total to date) and I don't do any at all some months.
