Do these tonsils look infected?

My dd has a very sore throat and fever, I called GP on Friday who said to watch and wait over the weekend and she should be fine but I think she may need antibiotics? I'm going to call GP again in the morning as she's not feeling well at all. Do you think the left one looks lumpy?

They look red and inflamed but not infected, more likely to be viral than bacterial. Hope she’s better soon

HerMammy · 23/05/2021 23:39

Inflamed not infected. My DD has twice been in hospital with quinsy which is an abscess from severe tonsillitis, it looks like a lump coming from side of throat and is white and very disgusting. Call tomorrow and ask for anti biotics, we get them now without a GP appointment as it’s so frequent, best to catch it early.

NiceGerbil · 23/05/2021 23:43

No. I don't think so.

How sore? Hurty/ very hurty/ cut glass when trying to swallow reduced to tears?

I have massive tonsils btw so people always think they are swollen! So that depends on how big normally.

How high is her temp?

Thanks for replies, her temp is 38.5 but comes down when she has Calpol for the pain. She has a long standing prob with her tonsils and is on the waiting list for tosillectomy, normally always bacterial and she gets tonsil stones too. Must be viral this time then as she has all the symptoms but no white spots! She is feeling pretty poorly not her usual bouncy self, took herself off to bed this afternoon and not eating much at all.

Personally I'd keep her medicated on OTC pain relief, and leave the doc for if it worsens.

Thank you @NiceGerbil

No probs hope she gets better soon!

MiloAndEddie · 24/05/2021 06:56

Just to add, my throat looked like that when I had COVID Confused.

With the fever too I’d probably get her tested.

Hope she’s ok.

greymayday · 24/05/2021 06:58

To me they do - they look very big and swollen. I struggled with tonsillitis for years and years and my tonsils didnt always have the classic yellow/white spots. Sometimes just really swollen and large.

Get well soon to your DD Flowers

On the second pic it looks like she has some massive tonsil stones

I used to find getting the out helped inflamed tonsils

That's her teeth
wildeverose · 24/05/2021 08:31

No, doesn't need antibiotics, it's viral rather than bacterial and will clear up on its own. Lots of fluids and paracetamol to ease discomfort and bring temp down

SinkingSeaweed · 24/05/2021 09:11

I appreciate all the replies thank you. She's had a bit of a rough night and started coughing a lot, could just be because of the swollen tonsils but she's booked in for a test today.

Tonsils out is very rare nowadays, my older DD had tonsillitis 11 times in 12 months and still didn’t reach the threshold of 12 in 12 months, she’s now 21 and fortunately only gets it once or twice yearly now.
Other DD is awaiting an ENT referral
due to two Quinsy cases and may have them removed due to this.

Hey I know this is an old post but my dins looks exactly like you daughters tonsils here. Can I ask if they ever went down or what was causing the enlarged tonsil? I'd appreciate any feedback I'm driving myself crazy thinking my dins tonsils look odd!
