OH NO nearly finished Death in Paradise, what should my next comfort trash be?

I’ve “enjoyed” Death in Paradise as a bit of a relaxing watch that my family have no interest in watching with me, before that I watched Shakespeare and Hathaway which had a similar comic mystery vibe. What should I cue up next?

I found my people 😁 , I'm currently living aboard (originally from the UK) and BBC First (on local TV) has got me though some long days.

Love watching Death in Paradise, Rosemary & Thyme, Shakespeare and Hathaway, Agatha Raisin etc Even my 7yr old daughter will sit and watch Death in Paradise. They are currently showing All Creatures Great and Small (2020) which is good and easy to watch.

Stakhanovite · 24/05/2021 21:30

Oh yes, definitely Marvellous Mrs Maisel.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/05/2021 21:34

Is Mallorca files only on bbc?

TheThermalStair · 25/05/2021 10:48

Thanks for the suggestions, it's a shame some of them are tucked away on other networks etc - there are so many!

If anyone fancies some audio Wimsey, BBC Sounds have got episode 1 of The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club on today, I presume it's being serialised all week.

I preferred Edward Petherbridge as Wimsey, and yes, Harriet Walter was perfect!

PlanetMJ · 25/05/2021 21:02

Ooh, please watch 800 Words on BBC iPlayer. Total comfort telly, it was my fave on mat leave when I couldn't cope with anything too harrowing and needed a spot of soothing.

It's about a journalist who's wife dies suddenly and he moves his two teenagers from Sydney to the little New Zealand seaside town where he spent his childhood holidays. It's got a Doc Martin vibe, lots of quirky local characters, intriguing love lives and plot twists, plus gorgeous scenery.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 25/05/2021 21:08

Definitely The Broken wood Mysteries

ThePontiacBandit · 25/05/2021 21:35

If you have Netflix, I highly recommend White Collar. It’s about a con artist who an FBI agent has been chasing for years. He finally catches up with the guy, guy goes to prison but escapes! FBI agent catches up with him and gets him to work with the FBI solving cases instead of his prison sentence. It’s funny, witty and set in New York. The man who plays the con artist is bloody gorgeous too!

TheThermalStair · 26/05/2021 16:49

Thanks - love the name @ThePontiacBandit I actually tried to change my name to that but it was already taken!

@TheThermalStair sorry I disappeared. The Brokenwood mysteries are a team of 3 detectives living and working in small town New Zealand. A lot of the plots are similar to Midsomer murders, but there’s a thread of humour in the some of the characters. So you have the busybody old lady who pops up most episodes, or the bar manager who is in several. They might be witnesses or friends but you get to know the characters. Some of the plots are a bit far fetched but definitely easy watching.

Orla1 · 26/05/2021 18:38

My go-to comfort tv is always Gilmore Girls or DiP!
I’d also recommend:
The Marvellous Mrs Maisel (Netflix)
Ted Lasso (Apple TV)
The heart Guy (on Drama in the U.K. aka Doctor Doctor in its native Australia, I think)
Everwood (Amazon prime)
Sex Education (Netflix)

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/05/2021 18:46

I'd agree with lots of these. Heartbeat, maybe Wild at Heart if you can find it.

Maybe not quite as gentle, but similar to White Collar (except it's mostly murders), is The Mentalist. There's one point it goes a bit miserable, but the first couple of series are good.

We've been re-watching the Andrew Lloyd Webber singing competitions recently. Grin

ThePontiacBandit · 26/05/2021 22:34

Ha ha I was going to suggest Brooklyn Nine-Nine but I guess you’ve seen it then? There’s a poster called Jimmyjabs too Grin

JackieQueen · 26/05/2021 23:55

Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes is my comfort watch, never get tired of them!BrewCakeGrin

idontevenknowanyonecalledblurb · 27/05/2021 00:14

Schitts creek- it's the best thing I've watched in ages. Or Ginny and georgia on Netflix

waltzingparrot · 27/05/2021 00:15

White Collar on Netflix was a good watch. Art thief/FBI gentle drama with some good comic lines too.

Virgin River, Netflix too

Luzina · 27/05/2021 00:17

Yeah I so I 100% know how bad it is but Midsomer Murders is my top tip

Kyph · 27/05/2021 18:04

Several people recommending Brokenwood, I've tried it twice and gave up, I'll give it another go!

WouldBeGood · 27/05/2021 18:07

Chesapeake Shores

The Good Witch

Another thing I can’t remember the name of about a midwife moving to a small town

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 27/05/2021 18:08

Superstore! On Netflix, smart but cute

crosstalk · 27/05/2021 18:41

Montalbano. and Young Montalbano.

NotJustAnyOldDog · 27/05/2021 19:14

Yay. Loads of my favourites. I like gentle TV. Mallorca Files so similar to DIP. I love Shakespeare and Hathaway. What about Strike on BBC? Not even remotely similar but I also love Better Things on iPlayer too.

TheThermalStair · 27/05/2021 21:05

I think the midwife/small town one is Riverdale or whatever it’s called? I tried to enjoy it but it was a bit like Gilmore Girls but without any jokes. I Love GG sadly too soon to rewatch it!

OP posts:
ThePontiacBandit · 27/05/2021 21:54

It’s Virgin River...Riverdale is the one about teens who live in a remote town. I watched it. I thought it was okay but not great.

enjoyingscience · 27/05/2021 22:03

Lucifer on Netflix is perfect low stakes silliness. It’s about the devil solving crimes, and there’s enough of it (3 series on prime, 2 on Netflix) to do a proper binge on if you like.
