OH NO nearly finished Death in Paradise, what should my next comfort trash be?

I’ve “enjoyed” Death in Paradise as a bit of a relaxing watch that my family have no interest in watching with me, before that I watched Shakespeare and Hathaway which had a similar comic mystery vibe. What should I cue up next?

@startrek90 I love the books too, they're super easy to pick up and there are LOADS of them. I'd love to live in Carsley.
The casting for the series is quite different, with Ashley Jensen's Agatha being younger, blonde and erm.. Scottish. It's great fun though.

mogtheexcellent · 24/05/2021 14:28

Mallorca files. Miss Fisher, the coroner

person6743 · 24/05/2021 14:39

I find Silent Witness silly but enjoyable!

Pashazade · 24/05/2021 15:56

Another vote for Father Brown, also The Good Place. OP Now is Sky's version of Netflix so you download the app and you can pick and choose which channel bundles you subscribe too. Much cheaper than actual Sky and you can switch the subscription on and off whenever you like. Also if you threaten to leave via the website they usually do you a deal on the next few months without having to spend hours wrangling on the phone Grin.

EverNapping · 24/05/2021 16:00

Ooh I loved the Good Place, nice and soothing like a hug.

My mum couldn't stand to watch it with me, said it was too dull. No graphic violence, no sexual assault, no psychological torture for the viewer.

Kyph · 24/05/2021 16:02

Father Brown has sustained me for over a year.
I second Miss Fisher's Murder mysteries (1920s Australia), (I love all Australian drama).
There is a spin off called Miss Fisher's Modern Mysteries.
Very similar is the Frankie Drake mysteries (1920s Toronto)
Agatha Raisin on Sky
The Coroner (the British one - quirky seaside crime, not the American which is quite different)
Doc Martin has the scenery.
I have watched some of the Mallorca files but they don't quite do it for me.

PenOrPencil · 24/05/2021 16:03

Death in Paradise is such great comfort viewing, isn’t it?
Blue Bloods is good, too, as was Murdoch Mysteries. I find Murdoch got a bit silly, though, as Murdoch invented everything that was ever invented!

TheThermalStair · 24/05/2021 16:09

Aw thank you all! Glad I too have found my people. If anyone hasn’t watched Shakespeare and Hathaway I really recommend it too (think I got mixed up with Rosemary and Thyme and put off watching it for ages!)

Agatha Raisin, Father Brown and Foyles war are my gotos for gentle afternoon feet up time.

Was about to recommend S and H. New series being filmed soon.

Hustle (mentioned upthread) is superb also.

SemiFeralDalek · 24/05/2021 17:24

Definitely Jonathan Creek. What about life on Mars or ashes to ashes?

MrsLeclerc · 24/05/2021 17:36

Death in a paradise got me through my morning (all day) sickness with DS!
Comfort viewing for me is:
Parks and Recreation, Community, Superstore (Netflix), Schitt’s Creek, The Good Place, Brooklyn 99.

If you have Disney+ they have lots of documentaries on there. One in particular about Howard Ashman (I think it’s just called Howard) was fantastic. He wrote the songs for Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid and Aladdin which were my childhood films. Absolutely amazing film that stuck with me months later.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/05/2021 17:49

Second or third Father Brown & Jonathan Creek. Lewis might still work if you can get over Laurence Fox being a total bellend in RL.

LadyofMisrule · 24/05/2021 17:51

I’ve nothing original, but second Mallorca Files and Miss Fisher, Miss Marple (but only the Joan Hickson ones), Poirot, and Midsomer Murders.

LadyofMisrule · 24/05/2021 17:53

Hamish MacBeth is also quite good fun. (And has Robert Carlyle in it, which is always a bonus!)

hels71 · 24/05/2021 17:56

Another vote for Miss Fisher. Also Father Brown. We enjoyed Hamish Macbeth, Poirot, Miss Marple (Joan Hickson) and Peter Wimsey

Kyph · 24/05/2021 18:14

To add to my pp.
Grantchester, Endeavor, Foyle's War.
I did try to re-watch Hamish Macbeth last year which I loved first time round but the appeal had gone for me.

Not a crime series but A Place to Call Home (Prime) is fabulous.

Oooh Peter Wimsey... they must be ripe for a remake? I saw one of the old TV films and the actor playing him seemed quite old for the part. Wonder who would make a good Wimsey now.

I have the BBC dramatization of Peter Wimsey and listen to them so often mum parents have asked if I'm trading to memorize them word for word.

I can't get past watching Laurence what a complete beep Fox.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/05/2021 20:19

Both Ian Carmichael and Edward Petherbridge seemed a bit old for the part, though the latter was (iirc) very good and Harriet Walter was perfect as Vane. I'd like to see those again.

Violetparis · 24/05/2021 20:24

Inspector George Gently
Endeavour
All Creatures Great and Small on Channel 5

Stakhanovite · 24/05/2021 20:27

Oh, cheers for the tip about The Mallorca Files! Just what I felt like.

VienneseWhirligig · 24/05/2021 20:40

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel
Agatha Raisin
The Coroner

All excellent easy watches.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/05/2021 21:10

Yes. Endeavour.

I’m just getting to the end of Lewis. It hasn’t been as bad as I thought. I reckon I only think about what a twat LF is about twice a week when watching it now.
