Can you identify this movie from a very vague description?

This is bugging the hell out of me because I hardly remember anything about this film.

It’s early 90s possibly 80s.

It starred someone who went on to be a big star but he was only a teen at the time. Like Leo Dicaprio or Brad Pitt but not them. Possibly someone who went on to become troubled like River Pheonix, but not him either.

It had a scene where kids were diving off a quarry/cliff/ravine into a lagoon/lake/river.

It was a very “cool” film, indy coming of age type movie. A similar feel to it as Stand By Me but the kids in it were older teens.

It not much to go on is it?!

Breaking Away? About a bicycle race? A young Dennis Quaid is in it.

Not Point Break, I did google Keanu Reeves in my search though because it’s someone like him that’s in it.

That’s the film that google keeps throwing up but it’s later than that. More of a 90s vibe.

Not Sleepers either I’m afraid.

It was more of a coming of age summer movie.

Your description made me think of two things, a 1988 movie with Keanu Reeves dealing with his friend’s suicide from jumping off a cliff, and a fairly recent movie I haven’t seen but the poster is a bunch of teen boys jumping into a lake or something - Kings of Summer.

Kings of Summer would be a modern equivalent of what I’m remembering. But it was definitely much earlier. I remember friends at college in 1996 having the movie poster, usually alone with The Beach. Definitely a teen heartthrob type movie.

Glad to be of help. I was a cinema manager for 15 years from 1990-2005 and think I saw just about every film in that era.

Stand By Me is on tv at the moment and it brought it to mind for some reason.
