Tax Credits Overpayment

I've just received a letter from tax credits, stating that I've been overpaid and owe approx £2000 back. However, I've just checked and totted up the entirety of last year's payments and they came to just over £500. How on earth can they state I've been overpaid by that much, when I've not received that much money??

Does it go back more than one year?

It just says up to 5th April this year. However, had I been in arrears they surely shouldn't have kept paying me the total of £500 over the last year?

This happened to me too, they said it's accumulated over a few years and was caught in an audit. There didn't seem to be any way of finding out or having it recalculated so we ended up setting up a repayment arrangement.

We stopped getting tax credits last year as our income was over the threshold but they started giving us £11 a week with the Covid payment thing, last week I got a letter saying we'd received an overpayment in the last financial year - it was for the exact amount of the weekly Covid payment that is queried with them at the start.

Don't know their arse from their elbow 🙄

I have had an over payment and now only receive £5 a week because I worked over time during the pandemic. The over time was swallowed up in bills and now my income does not cover outgoings - literally eating toast every day - getting the letter and the shock of all of this has really affected my mental health - awful
