We could have an extra cupboard or 2 bar stools. Therell be a kitchen table only a step or two away.

Will people sit at the island while I Nigella about pouting... or not do much and we should just have storage....

Depends, do you need the storage?

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 22/05/2021 12:14

Lots of factors, all personal - do you have small children who might be clambering on the chairs, do you need an extra cupboard, what do you think works best aesthetically for your kitchen?

We had a new kitchen last year and a big island, but as we have a breakfast table in the same room (and a sofa) it seemed pointless to also have bar stools. Guests can stand at the island with a drink while I cook or sit on the nearby sofa. Plus small kids. And aesthetically I like the solid look of the island and worktop, rather than having an overhang. But it comes down to personal preference.

I personally like stools at an island as long as there is an overlap to accommodate legs. I like to perch whilst prepping veg etc.

I also don’t understand why you can’t have both? Mine has both, as do most people’s.

This was the island in my old house. It had and over lap with stools plus two cupboards for storage. You can have both!

We have stools and I like having dp sitting chatting to me while I’m cooking or even bringing stuff to and from the pantry.

We have stools at our island, I didn’t think I’d use them but I do! It is Quite sociable for someone to sit across from whoever’s cooking. And I sometimes perch on them while somethings cooking.

Depends on the size of the kitchen and how much storage you have at the moment vs. want, and where your dining table is.

We have space for stools at ours but because the dining table is literally 2ft away we've never bothered getting stools for it.

It's a small kitchen so we would much prefer to have the space as storage rather than the gap. In fact we're buying our next house off the same developers and have asked them to stick cupboards under there instead.

We have stools at ours, they are used all the time! The 'prep' side has 2 deep cupboards and 2 wide and deep pan drawers. We love it.

I see what you mean, we could have both....

We have both. Don’t actually use the stools as much as I thought we would, mostly when we have guests.

We have stools and a table and we use the stools all the time.
