Can I still cash this at nationwide if I have my marriage cert?

I once wrote a cheque out of my husbands chequebook by mistake. The bank (barclays) couldn't have cared less.

Grrrr. Pressed post not preview.

So I don't think they look too closely! Ask them?

I get a few cheques in my married name but my bank account is in my maiden name, I just take along my marriage certificate and some photo id and they sort it. I'm sure it'll work the same the other way round. It's a pain in the arse finding an open branch mind, really should change my accountGrin

So long as you held the account in your maiden name Nationwide normally won’t take a second glance at it (I had this after I got married). If it’s a new account then I’d take your marriage certificate with you just in case.

I tried a online chat with nationwide who didn't confirm yes or no, tried to call but they don't deal with cheques or queries over phone currently apparently, its a 40mile round trip to my closest nationwide so just do not want to waste a trip. Thank you

A general Google seems to suggest it will be fine if you take your marriage certificate with you. Have you tried phoning your local branch to double check? I always find Nationwide to be very helpful so I am surprised they couldn't answer your query which is hardly "out there" as queries go!

dementedpixie · 19/05/2021 17:55

They shouldn't accept it as legally it has to go into an account in the same name as is on the cheque. Could you get the cheque changed or a new one issued in the correct name?

InTheNightWeWillWish · 19/05/2021 17:58

If you take your marriage certificate they’ll be able to process them.

However, if you didn’t change your name (neither did your DH) and your dad gets confused so randomly sends a cheque to DH for his birthday as DH MySurname, Nationwide won’t accept a marriage certificate in that instance because why would men change their name?
