How long before you wash your clothes?

How long do you wear your clothes before washing them?
I'll go first:

Tops - after each use
Jeans - 3-4 days
PJ's - 2-3 days
Bra - god knows 😂

Socks and knickers after one wear and tops that are tight around armpits
Jumpers, jeans, bras etc when they need washing

OverByYer · 19/05/2021 12:51

Socks and underwear washed after one wear. Everything else depends on if it passes the sniff test.
Oh sportswear usually after one wear although yoga gear maybe two.

Eileen101 · 19/05/2021 13:30

Tops, pants, socks - after every wear.
Jeans/jumpers,/hoodies - when they smell or look dirty. Although having said that, if I'm just in the house, I overlook the toddler's/baby's sticky hand prints on my clothes or bits of their toothpaste if they're otherwise clean.
PJ's - weekly when I change the sheets.

I try and get as long as possibly out of the kids clothes. They both get covered in food and mud being 3 and 1 so their clothes usually go in the washing basket every day. I take their jumpers off for meals, so usually get at least 2 days out of jumpers/cardigans.

Cloth nappies - usually 2 washes a week now I only have 1 in nappies. But at least they're not disposables, so this is the best scenario I think.

Oh and bras every couple of days. I only have 3 nursing bras in rotation, as they're expensive in bigger cup sizes.

aramox · 19/05/2021 13:33

Underwear daily. Socks , tops next to skin, bras , three days. Jeans, if dirty. Woollens rarely. Pjs 3-7 days (don't wear bottoms much)

ginghamstarfish · 19/05/2021 13:36

I am also amazed at the thought of washing everything after one wear (apart from undies and socks). If you get muddy/dirty/sweaty then maybe, but surely most of it is completely unnecessary. So all that detergent, all that plastic, all the microfibres going into the sea ... what a shame. The planet is indeed fucked as one PP put it.

Nicolastuffedone · 19/05/2021 14:01

Strangely enough, I don’t wear milk? Not sure that was the best analogy 😂 the day hasn’t arrived for me yet where I need to resort to sniffing my clothes to check if I need to change them! What a miserable way to live...you live your way Blossomtoes sniffing your clothes, I’ll just stick to washing mine.

It was an entirely appropriate analogy, I’m sorry your brain lacks the capacity to make the entirely obvious connection.
Lunaballoon · 19/05/2021 15:30

@Nicolastuffdone Oh the horror of having the common sense to know when something needs washing by a quick sniff! Shock

Nicolastuffedone · 19/05/2021 16:25

Nothing wrong with my brain thanks! And you’re right Lunaballoon the horror of having to sniff clothing to know when to change it!! Absolutely gross!!

doubleshotespresso · 22/05/2021 17:45

I'm more than a bit 😳 at the volume of people posting here rewearing clothes.
Pyjamas twice a week? Eurgh
I just cannot get my head around putting on clothing that's been left unwashed from previous wear, but pyjamas I've already slept in no that's just gross.

Proper hygiene is not something I'm prepared to compromise on though we have tried significantly in recent years to reduce waste in other areas, don't consider that selfish at all. Presently there's only 3 of us in household so the laundry is perfectly manageable and I seriously doubt making a huge dent in the planet.

MrsJBaptiste · 22/05/2021 21:08

Oh, FFS.

Yes, it's just awful to wear something more than once isn't it? I'm more than a bit 😳 that you must be so sweaty that you have to wash your clothes so often 😷

BakewellGin1 · 22/05/2021 21:16

Pants, Tops, Bras, Socks after every wear
Jeans and Work Trousers after two wears

DS Teen needs everything washing after one wear apart from Blazers, Hoodies and Jackets which get fabrezed and washed weekly as they dont go next to skin.

DS Toddler regularly all of it every wear. He has a love of mud, puddles, sand and water

Milesbennettdyson · 23/05/2021 08:28

Full clean clothes every day

crapbuttrue · 23/05/2021 08:43

Can't understand what's so offensive about sniffing clothes.

Explain please.

doubleshotespresso · 23/05/2021 13:03

@crapbuttrue

I don't think that's what is offensive. I find it odd though that anybody would be in so much doubt as to whether or not any clothing is fit to wear they would need to sniff them? If clothes are washed this should not be necessary

I am just contemplating how people are putting clothes they have worn presumably back into a wardrobe full of clean clothes? That just feels odd and wrong to me...
Whatever works for folks I guess, but for us it's clean clothes, worn, then washed- I never questioned that anybody would think this weird, wasteful or God forbid selfish, to me it's just normal housekeeping.

Oly4 · 23/05/2021 13:08

Tops pants and socks - 1 wear
Bras 2-3 wears
Jeans 2-3 wears
Jumpers 2-3 wears
Pyjamas 3-4 wears ... I shower every morning and night so fail to see how this is gross.
The kids get their entire outfits washed after one wear.. they are grubby

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 23/05/2021 13:21

Pants - 1 wear
Socks - usually 2
Bras - not sure get slung in wash whenever
Tops - 2 wears unless minging
Jumpers - 3 or 4 depending, sometimes 5
Jeans - 3 or 4 days plus a few evenings

I grew up in a house without a washing machine.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 23/05/2021 13:23

@doubleshotespresso, stuff goes over the back of a chair, or into a dedicated 'have worn it before' drawer. Clean and worn stuff doesn't get mixed up.

Pootle40 · 23/05/2021 13:28

Eek why would you wash jeans after one wear?!

sourrain · 23/05/2021 15:41

I'm really really surprised at how many people wash clothes after one wear! I know no one, literally no one, IRL that does that! Each to their own I guess.

Underwear (as in pants) get thrown in the laundry after 1 wear, as do socks.
Bras I probably wear 3-5 times before washing (5 at an absolute max and that's if I'm not doing much).
Tops and dresses I usually wear twice before washing, sometimes can stretch it to 3 if I wasn't wearing it for long. If I'm running about at work then I will wash after 1 wear, usually.
Trousers: probably 3 wears
Jeans: 3+ wears
Jumpers and cardigans: 3+ wears
PJs 2-3 wears
Gym wear: 2-3 wears (I don't go to the gym and purely work out at home. I don't mind if it has a drop of sweat on it, I'll be having a shower after anyway. My sweat levels are quite low).

Obviously if something gets dirty I'll throw it in the laundry basket but other than that what's the point? That being said I do not sweat much at all.

spittycup · 23/05/2021 15:49

@Blossomtoes

Sniffing your clothes before you wear them to check if they smell!!?? Do people really do that?

Yes.

Yes, exactly. Some people need to grow up honestly. Wash when it gets grimy, when you know you've been sweating or it's been worn a few times. Incredibly wasteful to keep washing clean clothes, just reverses everyone else's efforts to save water and energy

spittycup · 23/05/2021 15:52

@MrsJBaptiste

I'd advise anyone sweating so profuse in winter that they need to wash their clothes after each wear, to go and see a GP, madness

Passthecake30 · 23/05/2021 16:08

I’m working from home so I wear joggers/hoody around the house and get changed for when I go outside. Outer get washed when there’s visible dirt on them, tshirt, knickers and socks every day. When (if?) I go back to work I’ll be less of a slattern.
