I know I'm a weather bore but WTAF is going on...

Honestly, hail, torrential rain, winds and local flooding since last night and more to come. It's May FFS and I'm still in my jumper and heating on. Have an outdoor thing this weekend which is looking less and less likely because garden now waterlogged and more rain on the way. Hate this weather so much.

@emmathedilemma

Ah I think you're in a microclimate *@MissScotland101* I'm in Edinburgh itself and it's been fine but my friend a few miles into Midlothian was moaning about the cold and wet on Sunday. She had torrential rain and I'd caught the sun!
I’m outside towards Fife way and torrential showers, hail stones really hitting off the window like it was going to smash, and quite sunny but freezing...maybe in a few years we will be having barbecues on Xmas day, like down under...I live in hope Grin

BlankTimes thanks for the proper explanation. I always thought it meant the month May, not the plant. Now I know although it works either way. DH's mum always said it

It makes more sense that it means the blossom, as that is affected by the weather, not the calendar Smile

I keep setting off for a bike ride, getting a few miles away from home and then the sky turns black and I can see the rain coming in over the hills. I have to try and race it back home.

Today however has actually been lovely (Yorkshire). Sunny, (semi) warm, I even took my coat off.

dementedma · 18/05/2021 20:43

Fife here and its actually been quite pleasant which makes a change from all the rain. Longing for some proper warm spring sunshine though

newlabelwriter · 18/05/2021 21:52

I don’t think I’d even mind so much if it was one thing or another. Changeable doesn’t even cover it 🙄

Yeah, but the Hawthorne blossom is out round me.

Still bloody freezing though

Gertie75 · 18/05/2021 22:47

There's a local weather guy near me who has his own weather station, does forecasts on Facebook, goes on local radio etc
Yesterday he posted a 3 month chart and it was pretty shit right through summer, lots of spells of rain and low temperatures, on the plus side we'll be able to park in Cornwall next year because everyone will be going abroad again after a washout UK holiday this year Grin

Fontella · 18/05/2021 22:59

South coast here.

Took a friend to a hospital appointment today and sat waiting in the car in the car park, door open, lovely and warm, blue sky and glorious sunshine.

Within seconds the sky darkened and it starting pissing it down. It was that quick, torrential rain hammering down on the cars and people who had previously been sauntering along were all running for cover.

It stopped as suddenly as it started and I decided to go into the hospital reception bit to get a coffee. Got out of the car and the wind had gotten up and it was blowing a gale. All this in the space of 20 minutes!!

Crazy weather. Confused

FizzyPink · 18/05/2021 23:03

This is the thing, if it rained all day then fine. But it’s so hard to make plans or know what to wear because it can be beautiful sunshine one minute and then pouring with rain the next.
I usually go for an hours walk every lunchtime but I haven’t been going for the past week because it’s impossible to know what the weather will do. And I admit I am not one to enjoy a walk in the rain

Bloodybridget · 18/05/2021 23:15

Sorry, it's all my fault. I spent most of April saying "We really need some rain".

campion · 18/05/2021 23:19

We've got people coming to lunch on Thursday. First guests since I don't know when and I see we're due a mini hurricane and monsoon all day!

They can admire the new stream which has formed all the way down the lawn, I suppose.

CovidCorvid · 18/05/2021 23:23

I’m meant to be going away caravanning next week and think I will cancel. The whole week looks like a wash out and the wind is picking up next week!

AlwaysLatte · 18/05/2021 23:39

It will be a short summer this year!
At least the garden is getting a good watering, I suppose!

AlwaysLatte · 18/05/2021 23:43

We had hailstones today, thunder too... this morning it looked lovely. I went to the laundry and emptied the washing machine to hang out the washing and by the time I came back out with it there were dark clouds and spotting rain. So I took it back into the laundry room and hung it up, then when I came back out it was warm and sunny again!

Titsywoo · 18/05/2021 23:47

We were spoilt last year! May 2012 was exactly like this - cold and wet and horrible.

mumwon · 18/05/2021 23:50

The summer of 76 didn't start till June - than we had a heat wave until September
Cross fingers
Rather than calling it Global Warming some Climate experts call these changes Global Weirding =as in strange changeable extreme weather phenomenon

Davros · 18/05/2021 23:55

I did my O'Levels in the summer of '76. It WAS hot, I found my diary and it mentions the weather quite a bit

Mandalay246 · 19/05/2021 00:26

I'm in NZ and we have only been getting cold weather for the past couple of weeks. Before that we were getting temps in the mid twenties nearly every day!! I have a friend in the UK and we compare temps - it's been colder there every day, and yet we are nearly into winter,

Wineat5isfine · 19/05/2021 00:28

Home Counties here...truly think the weather has long Covid....Confused

KatherineJaneway · 19/05/2021 00:33

Earlier today it was warm and my patio doors were open. A few hours later thunder and a hail storm. Bizarre.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 19/05/2021 00:51

See what it is, is that it's because we're not in lockdown.

If Boris announced a new lockdown we'd be straight into the most amazing early summer weather ever.

newlabelwriter · 19/05/2021 05:02

I really don’t know what to do about event on Friday for DM. Rain all day forecast which I have gazebos for but now winds look like they’re coming too. Even she, who was really up for it come rain or shine, is talking about rescheduling as it’s so muddy outside now. 🙄

Ozgirl75 · 19/05/2021 05:19

I’ve noticed that the U.K. often gets a similar summer/spring to what we’ve had in Aus. So our 2019/20 was boiling hot, no rain for weeks, absolutely scorching and then you guys also had a nice hot summer.
This year we had rain and more rain! It was welcome here but even in Sydney I don’t think it hit 40 once all summer and we often had sun/rain/sun/rain etc.
I will say we are, so far, having a pleasantly cool and sunny autumn so hopefully it picks up for you.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 19/05/2021 05:37

Not all of Oz though, Ozgirl. The weather here in Perth has been very different than the East coast this year, we had a lovely hot summer, and the rain is only starting now for winter. Whereas summer 2019 was cooler than usual (no over 40s days). Its still mid to low 20s here and I have broken out my winter cardis. Smile.
