Anyone found a cold medicine that actually does what it claims ?

Has anyone found any cold medicine that actually works?
I do wonder if in the past the price has put me off the ones that claim to make you feel like you don't have a cold etc
Ds has brought yet another cold back from nursery and I could really do with not being a hangy snotty mess at the moment as I've got a really important piece of work due in

Night nurse really helps me to sleep even through a cough and cold.

Once a cough and cold has got hold of me though, the only thing I have ever found to stop it on its tracks is to swallow a crushed clove of garlic with a glads of water chaser.

It's not ideal but few days of that and my sinuses are perfectly dry.

Yes me
A whole bulb of garlic and a WHITE onion whizzed in blender
A jar of good quality honey
A whole lemon
All whizzed
Pour in jar and take as many dessertspoons as you can muster.
My dh managed 5 but I would aim for 2-3
Then one every hour
This stopped manflu in its tracks

Also take a gram of vit c three times a day
Increase your uptake of vit d3 with k2 ( no doubt everyone is on it now to twice a day)
Also take some echinacea tincture from natures answer, 12 drops twice a day in water

Remove all dairy and gluten from your diet while you are ill. Dairy is very mucus forming

This works

I do love a Lemsip. I’ve converted DP
also and my favourite is the ginger and honey one ☕️

RichTeaCheddars · 18/05/2021 12:06

Buy separate decongestant and separate pain killer. And menthol crystals. Dissolve then in a bowl and inhale the steam.

Use a nose rinse like Neil med

shewalkslikerihanna · 18/05/2021 12:08

Store garlic mix in fridge it will keep for several weeks
I believe a cold is natures way of detoxing so help it as much as you can with giving your digestion system as little to do as possible
Veg soups. Plenty of water .warm with some squeezed lemon or lime in it
Hot bath as hot as you can stand and wrap yourself in a big towel/ robe while sipping a hot drink to open the pores and let the toxins out
If you can stand it , skin brush

Personally I don’t believe in stopping the symptoms with otc medicine

Haven’t had a cold in years, or flu or covid

shewalkslikerihanna · 18/05/2021 12:10

I’ve recently had sinusitis/ hay fever
Tried a neti pot with pink Himalayan salt very effective

Everyone saying day and night nurse - tablets or the actual medicine?

Giggorata · 18/05/2021 12:11

Properly made chicken soup.
I'm not kidding. I was in a tent at a festival, shivering with a temperature and coughing and sneezing, the full works.
One of the people in my group had brought with him a big pan of chicken soup, made by his grandmother. This is the standard cure for colds and fevers in his large Jewish family, so long as it starts with the whole carcass and includes all the traditional ingredients (I don't know what they are)
I went to bed and woke up the next morning full of energy and well, sans snot, cough, shivers, etc,
Miraculous! 😀

Talipesmum · 18/05/2021 12:12

Decongestant tablets at the bunged up snotty stage, paracetamol for headachy gritty feeling if needed, and hot lemon and honey to make you feel nicer, and get lots of fluids in.
Lemsip contains all of these but if I’m being picky I go with separate tablets so I can pick and choose if I actually need decongestant or not.
I was soooo happy when not pregnant or bf any more and I could have the option of decongestant again!

teaandcustardcreamsx · 18/05/2021 12:27

Agree with day/night nurse! I always take the tablets and it does absolute wonders

megletthesecond · 18/05/2021 12:27

Night nurse. But only 5ml, 20ml would knock me out for days.

Yes I’ve heard that Can you get the list of ingredients please I remember a book Chicken soup for the soul
MotherOfCrocodiles · 18/05/2021 12:38

You need one with pseudoephedrine.

The over the counter neurofen cold and flu (check it's the one with pseudoephedrine, they have another that is not nearly as good) or sudafed red.

PineappleWilson · 18/05/2021 12:57

Just to say that night nurse is brilliant, but you sleep like the dead, so if you have children who may wake in the night and you need to keep an ear out, it'sprobably not for you.

Tal45 · 18/05/2021 13:17

NIght nurse is amazing to help you sleep which in turn will help you get better quicker.

fedup078 · 18/05/2021 13:21

Thanks everyone
I nipped out an lunch time and got boots first defence and the day/night nurse tablets
Child free tonight so I'll see how I react to the night tablets

@Grapesoda7 Contac (and others like Sudafed and Boots own brand decongestants) are controlled rather than being available off the shelf, because they can be used to make methamphetamine.

SomeLovers · 18/05/2021 13:25

Personally I think a lot of cold and flu medications are overpriced and a bit pointless, they certainly don’t work any better than generic versions. If I have a cold I just take paracetamol, a decongestant if I’m bunged up (though I prefer the nasal spray ones over oral) and then a hot drink for comfort.

Hope you feel better soon OP!

Hellcatspangle · 18/05/2021 13:28

Day and night nurse is the only thing that does anything for me. I take the day nurse capsules in the day and the night nurse liquid at night.

sqirrelfriends · 18/05/2021 13:32

Not for children but I swear by Otrivine spray. Imo the worst part of a cold is not being able to breath and this helps more than anything else I have tried.

Night nurse is good too.
