Messenger apps

Hi,
Does anyone know of any messenger apps that aren’t classed as social media?

Kik, Telegram, Signal.

Me personally, I don’t consider WhatsApp to be social media, although a lot of people seem to.

I think it depends on your definition? I wouldn't class WhatsApp as social media. Other options could be wire, Kik, telegram etc. I wouldn't class them as social media but I'm sure some people would as they allow communication online.

By their nature, messenger apps are social media, in that they’re media which allow us to be social. Agree that it very much depends on your definition - what do you need?

Posted too soon - agree that I wouldn’t consider WhatsApp to be social media in the way Facebook is, but others do.

I don’t consider any messenger app to be social media, no one follows you and you don’t have updates or statuses, yes you can have group chats, maybe if you had group chats for everyone in your phone book, but most people I know use it for groups of friends or family as you would with text messages.

Lines have blurred with WhatsApp doing ‘status updates’, I think. But primarily, a messaging app is for private messages between two or more people, with no public aspect to it. Facebook, Twitter etc are designed to be public, even if people use them to solely communicate updates and media with a small group / stay on private. That’s a choice that can be made. Messaging apps are private by default.
