Palpitations and feeling like I cannot take a deep breath. What’s causing this?

This has been happening to me off and on since last summer. I can really feel my heart beating in my chest and feel slightly short of breath - like I need to take a deep breath in but can’t. This can go on for a few hours. I can still carry on as normal but it’s quite annoying.
I’m 48 and otherwise perfectly fine and quite fit.
I assume if it was anything too serious I’d be dead/ill by now as I’ve been having this for 10 months or more now.

I think you really need to consult a medical professional. Sorry, I know that’s a really annoying response and not what you’re looking for but I would really err on the side of caution with anything cardiac related. Does your GP practice use Livi? You can usually see a GP virtually the same day.

Anxiety? Low iron? Lots of things but you definitely need to speak to a GP.

Could be nothing, could be significant.. Might be easy to fix.... So why not just contact your GP?

Sounds like anxiety but you should consult a professional.

It could be anything from asthma to anxiety to something heart-related, to something else altogether. None of us know, so you need to speak with your GP. Flowers

I will speak to my GP. I’ve been trying to ignore it for months but probably do need to get to the bottom of it. Thanks for the replies.

Definitely get checked out, even just for peace of mind.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 17/05/2021 20:37

Could be menopause or perimenopause which can cause palpitations and anxiety.

Idontknowanymore05 · 17/05/2021 20:40

Go to the GP who can refer you for an ECG. X

faithinnature1 · 17/05/2021 20:41

Have you had covid-19? Sounds similar to long covid symptoms, that can happen even after mild or asymptomatic infection

randomkey123 · 17/05/2021 20:49

I had the same OP a couple of years ago..... I'm 50 now.

There wasn't any cause, and they just thought it could be as a result of hormonal changes but I had a wide ranging variety of tests to confirm it.

See your GP.

Is it after exertion?

Toobuktim · 17/05/2021 20:52

I second @Shimmyshimmycocobop
and would ask the doctor to take it into consideration when investigating.

I had this and turns out I’ve got a hyperactive thyroid
