Should I get iPhone 11 or 12, Pro or Pro Max?

I have a fairly ancient iPhone model, now on SIM only contract

I am perfectly happy with it for almost everything, except that I've seen the photos taken by my friends' more recently iPhone models and I'm amazed

I have young children and take loads of photos and would love to take pictures of that quality on my phone. It's actually really important to me so although I'd tried to go for the least costly plan etc before I'm prepared to pay the extra for an iPhone 11 or 12, Pro or Pro Max

What is the best option for photos of the family etc? I pay £15 on top of my current contract for insurance which I think is important to keep but has anyone done it cheaper any other way ie adding to home insurance?

Also - is there any benefit to buying outright and then taking SIM only? I'd be really reluctant to spend savings on this but just wondering what works out better value

I’m watching this thread, OP, as I have iPhone on a contract which is coming to an end. According to Money Saving Expert, the most economical way is usually to buy phone outright and have SIM only.

My current phone is an older model and my thought at the moment is to maybe get another, newer model, on contract, then hang onto it for next contract which would be SIM only. Other option is buying phone outright now, but can’t decide which phone!

And like you, a good camera is my priority.

I have an 11 and I don’t think the camera is good compared to some of my friends android phones,
so if you are going for an iPhone I would check out the pro versions.

@karalime that's interesting... I suppose I could always go for Android but I really like the iPhone. I was happy with the camera on my friend's which I think is a 12. The difference in plan isn't that much between 11 and 12 as far as I can see

I have an 11 pro max, bought grade a refurbished and have a separate sim. I don’t take many photos but dcs do and they say the camera is really good.

WhichIphone · 17/05/2021 13:22

Thanks @H1978, do you have any kind of insurance for it?

I have a 12 Pro Max and it is really good, but I will agree that some of the Android phones have even better cameras.

Of the iPhones the 12 Pro Max would produce the best photos.

I've found you get a better deal buying the phone directly from Apple then getting a SIM only contract (with O2 at least). Apple do finance too so you can pay monthly.

When you get a phone on a contract you pay for the price across the length of the contract, so if you compare the monthly finance plus the SIM only deal price you can compare to a deal with the handset too.

I pay the same now as I would have with a contract deal, but instead of 5GB of data a month, I get 60! I never use anywhere near that amount but do regularly use over 5GB.

I've just upgraded from a 6 to a 12. I went for a 12 mini, because I have small hands and the mini is only slightly smaller than the 6 - iphones have got gradually bigger over the years. I really like it and the phone certainly has more options to play around with than the previous one and the quality of the few photos taken so far has been brilliant. I bought the last one outright, having done the maths that it would save me money if it lasted for more than 3 years - it actually lasted for 6. If the new one lasts for 6 then it will be costing me £10 a month - plus sim card, obviously. I need to check if its covered by my home insurance - I think it is, but I'd want to be sure.

Thanks, this is interesting. Can I just swap my SIM into a new handset and carry on my current SIM only deal? I assume Vodafone have no need to know what handset I'm using?

I have just gone for a 12 pro. I was in the same situation as you, mainly for the occasions when i don't want to carry the camera.
I went from the SE and the size difference is very noticeable, I'm not used to it yet. I can't hold it in one hand and type because my thumb doesn't reach all the way across. I was dithering about the 12 mini because of the size, but went for the slightly better camera instead. I listened to DH who has the 11 pro and says it's fine, but of course he has slightly larger hands!

WhichIphone · 17/05/2021 18:57

Thank you, I had heard that about the size. I do value being able to use one hand (I am now). On the other hand it might discourage me from unnecessary phone use as I'm trying to only use it at set times except for pictures!

Interested in this as also looking to upgrade from a 6s to an iPhone 11 or 12. Did you find any good deals?
