Anyone know anything about family tree

In particular searching for paternal grandparents who was Irish? I've found him (I think) through a marriage register but I can't find his parents or anything else about him, it's like I keep hitting a brick wall. Is this because I need to be searching Irish records ?? I don't know where to start. Currently using ancestry to build a family tree after years of knowing nothing

Thanks if anyone knows about this stuff

You will need to look at Irish records. There is a family history board on here. I can remember where it is located exactly but it definitely exists - maybe in other stuff. The best place to ask this though would be genealogy forums. People there will have so much insight.

Although, are his parents not on the marriage certificate - or at least his father?

familytreestandstill · 17/05/2021 10:36

Thanks! I will pop over there and ask.
No it's not even the certificate just a register and a long list of names with theirs on it and the date of marriage. It's all very weird as it's like he didn't exist !!

Yes, I'm a genealogist. Grin

If your grandfather was born in Ireland you will need to search the Irish records.

www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

This is the official government site, it's absolutely free, they have a wealth of both civil registration and church records and you can click through to see the original not just a transcript.

Remember to use wild cards in your search - so if you are for example searching for Donnelly, using dnl*y will bring up misspellings of Donelly, Donnely, Donely etc.

Good luck!

A large amount of Irish records were lost in a fire in the 1922, so there are gaps.

Thank you for the links and info. He was born in the 30's so shouldn't have been lost. I have searched on the site and no results found at all. Really confused ! I've got his name and dob but that's all

What if he was adopted? Is there an adoption register?

StColumbofNavron · 17/05/2021 16:15

Was he Catholic? With my Catholic relatives they have been variously known in different places as e.g. Thomas Joseph or Joseph Thomas (Joseph in fact being the confirmation name as opposed to given name). There may also be spelling discrepancies as mentioned above. Or the name he was known by may not be his given name.

Is the marriage thing you've found the Civil Registration Marriage Index? If so it should have a Registration District, a Volume Number and a Page Number. This is where the actual registration is held.

I don't know how one goes about accessing the volume, but it's possible to order a copy of the certificate from the GRO if you know its reference information.

That should give you a father's name (fingers crossed, anyway Grin) and his residence and occupation on marriage.

Where have you got his name and DOB from?

These could be wrong - either mistranscribed or reported incorrectly. My grandfather called himself Robert John or John Robert on various documents, no pattern to it.

familytreestandstill · 17/05/2021 17:07

No he wasn't adopted but funnily enough my dad was (but by a close family member) the other kids went back to their parents and my dad stayed with the family member.
Could be a discrepancy in the birth date as I have found on ancestry the same name and birth month but it's a year off so could be that. I have sent off for the marriage certificate now so here's hoping it does have the info on there I need 👍🏻
