Washing a mattress cover?

Has anyone ever washed a mattress cover? The Ikea Sultan one to be precise - it's quite old so I don't know if they still do this one, but its in good condition as only occasionally slept in by humans, but it's got a zip at one end and the website instructions say it's removeable and washable, but I was wondering how much of a faff it might be.

Said mattress has been subjected to a dirty protest by a stressed cat (thankfully not a tom) and could really do with a proper wash but am worried about it shrinking, getting all out of shape or being impossible to get back on. Although I do have a strong and practically minded DP to assist with this - it definitely looks like a two person job.

Should I go for it or leave well alone?

I don’t know what yours looks like, but I have a quilted mattress topper and I Chuck that in the washing machine on a fairly regular basis, it’s absolutely fine. I think if it’s been peed on by the car then you don’t really have much choice but to at least try it!

Cat obviously, cars are usually much better behaved! 🤦‍♀️

I don’t have Ikea ones, but l throw my M&S ones in the machine quite regularly.
