Anyone not gone grey?

Realised today that my mum is 75 and still not grey. I'd always assumed she dyed her hair but apparently not. She used to have Auburn/brown hair and it has definitely faded but it isn't grey. I'm mid 40's and have spotted a few grey hairs but not many. I don't have the redness in my hair like her though.

Just wondered how common this was?

YY, my DP isn't going grey but is just losing the colour; she's a redhead (or was). It's just because the white hairs blend in and the overall effect is paler red rather than grey.

Serpenta · 16/05/2021 22:34

My mum is 78 and she's only about 30% grey. I'm mid forties and no grey. I think it's pretty common.

Cameleongirl · 16/05/2021 22:35

Not me, but my uncle had very dark brown hair and only ever had greying temples, it never spread beyond there. My grandfather was the same, apparently.

My Dad and I inherited fair hair from the other side of the family. He’s completely white now and mine is rapidly changing at 46. Although I’m fighting it for now.😂 We don’t even go grey, we turn from fair to white!

My grandad had mousy brown hair well into his 80s. I think it had faded a bit from how it was in his youth, but I always remember his lovely soft hair Smile

AliciaMayEmory · 16/05/2021 22:37

On the other hand my dad is pure white and I’ve been going grey since my 20s!

Gilead · 16/05/2021 22:38

My hair has faded from black to brown, I’m maybe 10% grey. I’m 62.

2tired2bewitty · 16/05/2021 22:39

My gran lived to 96 and, like you say, her hair faded but never really went grey. Sadly I seem to take after my other grandmother who my mum can’t remember ever having anything other than grey hair.

GertiMJN · 16/05/2021 22:40

My mum died last year aged 86 and had a few grey hairs at her temples, otherwise a thick glossy dark brown hair.
I'm sixty this year and barely any greys. My hair colour is different from Mum's but the 'not going grey' gene has been passed on for which I am very grateful. Saved me a fortune.

ToffeeAppleCaramel · 16/05/2021 22:41

I have lots of older family members with red hair and although the red fades it doesn’t look grey on any of them - more a different shade of red or slightly blonde.

WellTidy · 16/05/2021 22:43

My dad is 79 and his hair is still jet black. No chance that he’s dying it - he only uses shampoo, a comb, bar soap, toothbrush and toothpaste as his grooming routine. It is definitely thinner, but it’s still the same colour as it always was. His beard is very white though!

Dunairbeanat · 16/05/2021 22:46

Only greys I have are underneath the top layer. Makes absolutely no sense as top hair is still brown with no grey at the parting.
Lift the hair into a ponytail and it's like omg Grin

calamityjam · 16/05/2021 22:48

I'm 44 and still dark brown. My mum has only just started to go grey at 65 and my dads mum was 70% blond when she died at 86

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 16/05/2021 22:52

My grandmother, aunt and mother all have strawberry blonde hair - DGM lived to 90+ and still had mostly her natural colour, DM and DA are going the same way at 70+. I live in hope 😂 - although that said I absolutely ADORE a full head of grey on others.

Ecruelworld · 16/05/2021 23:03

I’m 60 and apart from a smattering of grey hairs mine is still dark brown. My DM died at 72 and had barely any grey hairs.

PickAChew · 16/05/2021 23:08

I started with my first white hairs in my teens but in my 50s, now, and my hair is still quite dark - probably 25% white.

willowstar · 16/05/2021 23:50

My husband has very few grey.hairs and he is 60 this year. I am late 40s, one grey hair at the moment!

DramaAlpaca · 16/05/2021 23:54

I've no greys yet in my mid-50s, and neither has my sibling. My DM is 85 and only has a sprinkling of grey, as did her mother in her 90s. I don't take after my DF who was white before he was 40.

Shorthairlady · 16/05/2021 23:55

I'm 48 with very few grey hairs on my head. I do have two grey eyelashes though Confused

LouNatics · 17/05/2021 00:01

My grandmother died at 90 with a few greys. My mother died at 53 with no greys. I’m 38 with no greys. I can’t image having any.

Lookingoutside · 17/05/2021 00:06

Same as you, OP. Saves me a fortune at the hairdressers.

CandyLeBonBon · 17/05/2021 07:26

I'm 51 and still pretty bright red. It's faded a little but still very pigmented. All my old school mates are completely grey now.

Branleuse · 17/05/2021 07:33

My dads gf is in her 70s and has barely any grey. She has thick chestnut hair thats all natural.
Ive been going grey since i was 19 unfortunately but will dye it forever. Ill be one of the old ladies with shockingly obviously dyed hair and wrinkles Grin my mum still dyes hers in her 70s

ZoeMaye · 17/05/2021 08:12

Red heads don't go 'grey' they eventually go white.

Sweetmayday · 17/05/2021 08:19

I've been dying my hair since my twenties, gave up 2 years ago. I always thought my natural hair colour was mid to dark brown but it's very dark brown. I see the odd grey hair and I'm 48.

Tribblers · 17/05/2021 08:21

I'm 52, mousy hair, just see the occasional grey/white hair when the light hits it. My mum is 83 and only about 20% grey/white, just very fine strands running throughout.
