Roasting Beef

I’ve googled but unsure about timings when it’s not a round weight - I have a topside joint which is 1.162kg. If I do 20 mins per kg plus 20 mins, roughly how long would that be?

45 mins - I take it you like your roast beef pretty rare?
What cut of beef is it?
When you take it out of the oven, wrap it in foil, put a couple of tea towels over it and rest it for 20 minutes or so while you cook the veg etc.

On your calculations it would be 40 minutes as it is just over 1kg in weight, but I found this which sounds too long to me:

If you like rare beef cook the joint for 20 minutes per 450g plus 20 minutes, for a medium result cook the meat for 25 minutes per 450g plus 25 minutes and for a well done joint cook it for 30 minutes per 450g plus 30 minutes.

I would check it after 40 minutes and adjust accordingly.

Not much help sorry.

I use this all the time - never fails. Round up the kg for pork, round down for beef/lamb

Sorry that should be 20 mins per half kilo

OP posts:

You need this calculation (20 x 1162/500)+20
Which will give you rare.

But in your head 162/500 is about a third so 7mins

So two lots of 20mins, plus 7 mins, plus 20mins is 1hr7mins.

sqirrelfriends · 16/05/2021 13:40

20+ (20x 1.162) = 43.24 minutes.

TeenMinusTests · 16/05/2021 13:42

sqirrel The OP correctly corrected to 20mins per half kilo.
(We are having beef tonight too).

sqirrelfriends · 16/05/2021 13:43

Sorry, didn't see your update.

66.48 or 1 hour, 7 minutes.

Actually that one that I put up there is about right as the old measure was 20 minutes per lb and 450g is roughly a lb. So Teen is correct!
