Old Town is very good for primary schools but they tend to be over subscribed. Its a lovely area though. Lawn is nice.

Purton, Wooton Bassett, Lydiard Millicent, Wroughton, Bishopstone, Chiseldon, Highworth all nice.

What kind of home are you after, and are you town or country?

How far out of Swindon could you go?

Bippertyboo2 · 16/05/2021 18:48

Purton has more of a village feel but Peatmore is a good area as is the school. Shaw is also very nice and the school, Brookfield, has a very good reputation. I'd leave North Swindon out of the equation on most counts.

Thankyou, the house is on the new build ridgeway estate, but keep seeing swindon is rough etc putting me off 🤦‍♀️ But as long as the housing area is nice I guess it will be ok

Swindon has a bad rep that it doesn't deserve. I absolutely echo @MrsFin recommendations, those areas are all great for raising a family.

Old Town is lovely too, but I personally think it's over priced for what you get and that the other areas are better value for money.

I woukd avoid Redhouse (I've lived here) Oakhurst (and here), Haydon Wick in North Swindon, because the estates tended to be crowded, overlooked and generally difficult parking - though it is bloody convenient for the Walmart Asda!

I feel similarly about Whicelstow and Ridgeway, but mostly because it gets used as a rat run (& it seems I am anti-new estates!)

Tadpole is a very new estate in North Swindon and much nicer than the ones mentioned above, but as its new, the house prices are high.

I lived in Swindon- I don’t like West Swindon- so built up, always traffic and busy. North Swindon is just cramped new builds. The new Tadpole Garden Village is nice but there seems to be increasing report of trouble there so I wouldn’t recommend there.

East Swindon is nicer, more green spacious and good priced housing.

Do you mean the Ridgeway Farm estate?

It's a typical new build estate on the outskirts of Swindon.
There's a new primary there I think, I suspect kids would go to Purton for secondary - that has a good rep, but no 6th form I think.
There are nicer places to live, but if you like new build estates, then you'll like it.

Swindon centre is a bit rough - lots of shops have closed and the council is struggling to attract new retail businesses to the area.
Most people would jump on a train to Bristol or Bath for shopping I think. Cirencester and Marlborough are lovely market towns for small shop shopping and afternoon tea.

I know this is an old post but does anyone know what Stratton is like in north Swindon, near the secondary school? I've heard north Swindon is good, but it doesn't seem so nice in this part?
