I cried at work today

I cried in front of my manager today during a one to one meeting. I feel so embarrassed. I have not long returned to work after a long term illness and my manager is new 😢

Do not be embarrassed. A good manager will be used to having people cry in front of them and will not treat you any differently because of it.

I hope you are OK, tough returning after long term sick. I hope they gave you a proper return to work interview.

Manager here. I wouldn’t worry- I have staff cry in one to one meetings regularly. I don’t think any less of them.

Its fine, I have cried in front of my boss, I have also been a supervisor and several people have cried in front of me. Its ok to cry and how people react says a lot about them and nothing about you.

I've had people cry too. Nothing to be embarrassed about. I don't look at anyone any different because they cried.

I actually want to know why they cried and what I can do to help or ease a situation to make it easier for them.

I think that is what upsets me I never had a return to work interview and it's just feels so overwhelming. My phased return has just finished and my anxiety just feels so bad at the moment with the stress of going back to full time hours.

I'm also a manager. I've had people cry in front of me, and I've cried in front of my manager too.

Please don't worry. I've only ever wanted to support my team when they've been upset, and equally, have received support from my manager.

It sounds like you've legitimate reasons for feeling upset.

A good manager should now ask you more and address these. 💐

Teacher here, we all cry several times a year. Sometimes its even kindness that gets you going rather than a negative when you're having a bad time of it. Noone bats an eyelid.
