Can anyone recommend a nice town within 2 - 3 hours of New York?

Ideally near the coast, but not essential, warm in August, nice restaurants and things to do.

New Paltz is nice- not big but in the beautiful Catskills with quirky little shops and lovely walks

Oh and Bantam, CT and surrounding areas also worth a look!

Hudson or Tarrytown. Get there by train from NY , so a nice scenic trip too.

Cape May (on the southern tip of New Jersey). Gorgeous Victorian town with sandy beaches. You can go on whale and dolphin watching boat trips. You could take the (car) ferry to Delaware. Anywhere in the north east in August will be very hot and sultry 🥵 so expect the odd storm:

Are you looking to live there and commute into the city? Or are you looking for a day trip while on holiday to New York? Because these are really different things.

I'm going to assume it's for a holiday. I would look either at the eastern end of Long Island or the Catskills (which isn't a town, but is lovely in the summer). If it isn't too far, I'd look to Cape Cod as well.

Btw if you want to go to a truly American 🇺🇸 experience (and you are going to Cape May or Philadelphia) and are renting a car - go to a rodeo! We used to live in NJ and greatly enjoyed going to:

Such a lot of fun and rodeos every Saturday night in August

Yes, it's so much fun seeing animals being abused and terrified for your entertainment.

If you wouldn't go to a bullfight or a fox hunt why would you go to a rodeo?

They're inherently cruel

Of course if you like animal cruelty as entertainment then that's your choice I guess Sad
