Portion question!

I'm making a chicken and mushroom pie later (with mash top) and I've frozen chicken that needs defrosting
Making around 5 portions and my options are to defrost 1 or 2 packs to use. So would you use 300g of chicken or 600g?
It's not a MN chicken Grin

600g.

HollowTalk · 15/05/2021 08:33

That's 120g per portion. That's fine.

QueenPaw · 15/05/2021 08:45

I'm adding a load of veg which is why I wasn't sure if 600g was too much
When I batch cook, no matter what meal, I always end up with 5 portions Confused it's a useless talent I have

Are some of the portions for children? Is so, I'd say 300g would stretch if you're using a lot of veg. If you want to feed 5 adults or if any one of the people eating is a teenage male, use 600g.

QueenPaw · 15/05/2021 08:51

@stuckinarutatwork no children, just for me Smile I'm cooking for the freezer
Adding mushrooms, sweetcorn, carrots, onions, creme fraiche, mustard etc with the chicken and putting mash and cheese on top

Definitely two packets, it'll be delicious. If there isn't enough chicken in there it'll be a vegetable and chicken pie Grin

Can’t comment on the portion size, but I’m unreasonably concerned about a chicken pie with mash on top Grin

QueenPaw · 15/05/2021 09:02

@MangosteenSoda Grin it's only because I'm freezing it. I bloody love pastry but I'm not convinced it is the best for freezing then microwaving to reheat
Now I want cheese and onion pie thanks Grin

Well do you like large portions or smaller ones? If there's loads of veg as well as the chicken, the portions might be quite large if you use 2 packs.

You could always adjust the number of portions according to what looks right when you have the finished dish. I would use one pack, and then be happy if I only end up with 3 or 4 meals. Or if you definitely want at least 5 meals, use 2 packs and freeze more meals, or keep a couple back to eat in the next few days.

MangosteenSoda · 15/05/2021 09:11

I’m trying to eat lighter meals in the run up to summer. Or ‘summer’ as it seems to be this year. But now I’m going to have to have a pie today.

QueenPaw · 15/05/2021 10:36

Right I've gone for two packs! They were reduced anyway so only 99p per 300g
