I never knew that about Harrogate

I know these threads come up every so often but here's my "I only just realised" one.

Just booked a few days in Yorkshire in August, started looking on the English Heritage website to see what we might want to visit and saw Harrogate. Which is not a seaside town. I have always thought it was. Maybe getting mixed up between a spa town and the seaside?

In my defence I did know about Portsmouth being an island but then to counter that I was also one of those eejits who saw the advert and thought Centre Parcs was all under the dome.

If you'd have asked me about the location of Tristan da Cunha any time before the publication of the Green List, I would have confidently said it was in the south Pacific, somewhere near Fiji Blush.

That has so made me laugh.

Book now for Betty's.

Grin you should try Matlock Bath next. Lovely seaside-style resort, except 50miles in land.

But Harrogate's great. Check out Nidderdale Llamas if you have DC.

I've been to MB so I knew that one!

Thank you for the llama tip, will check it out.

Plenty of piss soaked streets from the hen dos and so very reminiscent of most seaside towns on a Saturday evening.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/05/2021 11:03

Where in Yorkshire are you going? It's a big county, you could spend a week each in North, South, East and West and not scratch the surface of everything to see and do here.

Good on you op, enjoy Grin

Harrogate for the waters was a rival to Bath in Georgian times. Not as fashionable not as expensive.
Carried on into the 1930s perhaps later.
Several fictional characters 'went' there.

Oh, I know. There's so much. We will be based I'm Claxton. We will have 4 full days. Usually very much led by being members of both NT and EH. Will have one day in York itself which I have been to before. Then will need to narrow down a long list of things to do.

Claxton is a far way from Harrogate - it'll take you at least an hour to drive there! Lots of lovely places to visit nearby though.

I think Kirkham Priory is EH and close to Claxton - the pub in Kirkham (The Stone Trough) has fantastic views and you can swim in the river if you fancy? Also Rievaulx Abbey is pretty spectacular and close to Helmsley, which is a lovely place to visit.

lostlife · 14/05/2021 16:57

Go to Scarborough if you are in Calxton.

Nancylovesthecock · 14/05/2021 19:15

Ooh tips please, I'm off to Filey in August
